Hey, since we're talking about dishonesty, can you speak at all to the fact that these laws were originally written with the intent to punish corporate copyright infringement and never intended to be used against individual citizens?
There are all sorts of drawbacks to pirated television: bad links, spammy sites, crappy videos,...
While I agree with most of your points, the above is mostly incorrect. Yes, there are spammy sites, but most people (I hope) have figured out not to go to those, but instead join a private tracker or two. This also alleviates the bad links issue, and if 1080p HD video is considered crappy then I'd like to see what's considered good video!
Plus what if the guests just start dancing, even if I didn't pay for it?
I suspect you're coming at the question from the wrong direction. My guess: they will charge the double wedding fee by default, and then you can sue for half of the fee back if you can definitively prove that there was no dancing at your wedding. Simple!
Yeah, I largely agree about the national news. But if you want blood & guts and more crime than you can shake a stick at, you can still count on your local news station for some (mostly) fake scares.
On the other hand, in the US you get services bundled together you may not even need (then there's the extra cost for text messaging which is ridiculous in its own right).
And let us not forget the Data Plan that basically every carrier forces you to get if you have a "smart" phone OMGWTF HOW CAN THEY FORCE ME TO BUY A SEPARATE DATA PLAN FOR EVERY PHONE AND IT'S NOT EVEN UNLIMITED AND I'M ALWAYS AROUND WIFI ANYWAY!!!!111!!1!!!1 oh yeah, because there's not really any competition in the US, that's right, ok, calm down...
I suppose we've all noticed, at least though of us still watching regular TV, that shows are increasingly trying to seem "hip" and "with it" by having some sort of social media tie-in. The local news, for instance, seems increasingly desperate. They read a few tweets on-air, and beg you to like their facebook page, and somehow that means they are interactive. I just feel like patting them on the head and saying "Aww, that's cute, keep trying sport, you'll get it someday", even while I know they'll never get it.
Well, considering that it was roughly at 1 million at the time this story was posted, 19:31 2012/05/31, and it's now at over 2 million about 16 hours later, I'd say it may very well hit that mark.
"The court's reliance on "interoperability" ignores the undisputed fact that Google deliberately eliminated interoperability between Android and all other Java platforms. Google's implementation intentionally fragmented Java and broke the "write once, run anywhere" promise."
Well, gee, I guess that's why Google called it Android and not Java. Go figure.
Without IP there would be no:
patent trolls
IP enforcement agencies
copyright lawsuits
I'm sure there are more, and each of these represent some non-zero number of jobs, so IP definitely creates jobs, although I greatly question whether or not they could be considered "for" America.
The real question is how many MORE jobs were never created because of draconian IP enforcement?
I dunno, he's no worse than your typical patent troll, and in many ways better since his actions largely will not hamper basketball or song-writing innovation.
Senator Leahy, you've missed a very simple point: you could devote the entire $899,600,000 to "combat piracy of United States copyright materials" and you still wouldn't stop, or likely even dent, piracy.
Oh, and by the way Senator, since when has slang become acceptable when crafting a bill? Please grow up. I cannot believe that a U.S. Senator used the word piracy to refer to copyright infringement in a bill that he wants to become law.
