Enter the bureaucrats...the true rulers of the Republic. And on the payroll of the [RIIA], I might add. This is where [President Obama's] strength [and transparency] will disappear.
I'm not sure what 'widely held, common priciple, with nary...' you are thinking supports the things that appear to be in (because we're just not privileged enough to know) ACTA.
Due process? Nope, that's just to hard.
Property rights? As long as you accept that (1) copyright has anything to do with real property (2) a copyright holder maintains permanent ownership all their copyright works (3) You the consumer are only allowed access to that which you 'purchase' under the continued discretion and oversight of the real owner (copyright holder).
It's kind of like asking how many trees does it take to make a forest. We keep seeing tree after tree in this area. At some point, even without a real scientific survey, you get the sense that it's a forest.
Interesting. Just one question. If we the people are so ready to warmly embrace these new laws, because we know how right an fair they are, why is everybody so afraid that we the people might actually get to know what is in them?
Hell, even out elected representatives are being shut out of the negotiations.
There is nothing right or fair about the repeated shredding of the public domain.
I agree with that except for the part about commercial adaptation of a movie. I don't see why that would require payment to, or the blessing of, the writer of a book. A movie and a book are two different creative (hopefully) expressions of a story.
Now if you are going to try and tell me that a storyline should be covered by copyright then I would have to strongly disagree.
So if they can't be revoked, they why do they continually get revoked?
Every recent copyright act has retroactively stolen what should have rightfully been in the public domain.
With that precedent set I say we should just retroactively move all copyrights and patents to a 5 year limit, and require registration for copyright rather than it being automatic.
More to your point. I don't see the Android market as a disaster. It's pretty awesome, but it needs better filters. That doesn't mean Google or the carrier has to be the filter, but we need the filters for the apps just as we need filters for any massive set.
Sorry guys. That number is not at the limits of either long or int values, nor is this an issue of floating point math. floating point issues can only move a number a very small amount, and any programmer worth his pay wouldn't use floating point values for money.
I think I have to agree with the ruling here and I would hope to see more ruling like it. While at a glance the word groovle might look similar to google it should take much more than that to strip the domain from a person or company. If you go to the groovle home page it is clearly different than google.
"Every author is entitled to exercise his/her choice, and whether or not one agrees is no excuse to ignore the wishes of authors who do not want their works distributed in this manner."
I hear this argument quite often, and I just have to say no, wrong. They exercise their choice when they release a work to the world. The world then will do with it what they please. It is only through a series of artificial boundaries that we've been accustomed to think that way.
It's as if I made the first washing machine, said this device should only be used for washing clothing, and then got upset when a couple guys used it to make a dialysis machine.
Control is only something you can exert over physical things that belong to you. Ideas, expressions, thoughts, and the like become a part of our culture once they are released. Locking them away is locking away and limiting our culture and it's expression.
You are failing in that you fail to cover all the marginal costs (as an example that pizza guy doesn't just cost his salary).
The pizza market is fairly competitive. I strongly suspect that the $14.99 is far closer to marginal cost than the $6 bucks you guesstimated your way to.
Just as any FYI. I'm a software developer. I am paid a salary, as opposed to an hourly wage.
Software I create on my own time for me is mine. My company has no rights to it at all.
Some places may have language in the contract signed upon being hired, but certainly not all, and I'd be surprised if it was most. Even then most rulings require that the ownership is only on things directly related to the job or resources gained from having the job.
As an aside, you may want to look up the meaning of work for hire. It specifically pertains to the work the company hires you to perform, not anything to may do from the date of hire.
