"In addition, transparency can be misused on several levels – by providing unprofessional or poor-quality interpretation of information or documents, by conducting superficial or biased analysis, by lack of experience on the topic or by pursuing a political agenda."
Yeah, that's called "journalism". Nasty stuff, that. Can take your peace-of-mind clean off.
I find the IPO comment quite interesting. This is probably going to clean up a bit in the underbrush of not-very-well-run clunkers. Good for us. When was Yahoo! last relevant...?
But it's the LAW! The malware will HAVE to comply! It CAN'T not comply! Unthinkable!!1!one!
The thought processes (if indeed there are any) of politicians is a constant mystery to me. Women can do nothing that politicians can't do much, much better. They even fsck us more thoroughly...
I pity the people unable to do simple estimation in their heads. They are the ones likely to be taken in by scams like "Special offer: Buy 1 for $30 or 3 for $100!". Being able to do simple arithmetics on the fly without breaking out the smartphone should be a prerequisite for being allowed to vote...
They like it enough to not do anything about it. That looks a bit incriminating to me. So what exactly is the voter population doing if they aren't stopping illegal activities? Where does the personal responsibility begin? AFAIK there was a bunch of trials in the forties about this whole thing and the result wasn't nice for many of the participants...
Besides, it's not as if the Turkish government is trying to be discreet about this.
Turkey is a democracy. Government == majority of country. Being that the government is acting like a bunch of tossers and there aren't that many protesters in the streets, the country as such must have a majority of less-than-sane citizens.
Or have I misunderstood something about democracies?
Cream is not the only thing that rises to the top... To quote the Immortal PTerry (from memory so errors may have sneaked in): "The cream of society, or rather what was found floating on top and was therefore safest to call the cream". I do *not* want to start a flame war so no examples. :-)
Re: global cost of closed publishing estimated at $5.5 billion
That's a good start. Unfortunately it doesn't cover the lost opportunities caused by locking up the knowledge in a gated system. Has anyone seen an estimate for that? I know it's difficult because it's hard to detect something not happening but it could be many times higher if you include lost development opportunities in the poor countries, lost entrepreneurial opportunities everywhere, duplication of effort, lower-quality education etc. There's a lot to be said for PLoS.
*Nice* attitude. "There's a law and it's not up to me to question anything". Wrong. Dead wrong. The only protection the public (that's us, the people) has against abuse of power is that all the cogs in the big machinery question everything they do, hold every one of their actions up against the Big Purpose (hint: it also mentions the people) and check to see if there's a match. If they don't, at some point we'll have to hold another set of Nürnberg trials, listen to another round of "But I just followed orders!" and send another bunch of idiots off to their well-deserved punishment. You, sir or madam, sounds like you will be a participant but maybe not in a way you'll like...
Hehe, the UK has no problems with rolling over for the US on the most ridiculous of charges. Gary McKinnon anyone? Assange will hang/fry/go to Gitmo, no worries. And the free world will be a little less free...
Re: Seems apropos to give a pointer to this again:
Exactly. It makes me want to cry sometimes to realize that there are actually people out there who see option 2 as added value... They have completely lost sight of what customers want and become psychotic to the point where they're hurting themselves and their surroundings. Can we have an intervention team please...?
So let me get this straight. To be allowed to comment on a business one has to first think of an alternative business model, otherwise the criticism is invalid. OK. Nice. I think I smell a patsy...

I like it. The corrollary is that Big Content has no talent, just output, and they know it. It matches nicely with my experience.
