Re: Re: Re: Mason Wheeler
I think you should go back and read the comment that I was agreeing with. I don't know how you managed to infer that I "meant that it only works if (I am) not affected", and I'm not going to speculate. I think that it's absolutely deplorable that 1 in 3 bank tellers are on welfare, for example. I want a solution, too; I just don't think that this particular solution would work in the long term (for reasons Mason Wheeler explained).

Re: Mason Wheeler
You're exactly right. Raising the minimum wage only works if everything else stays the same, which it wouldn't. Not unlike college tuition subsidies which only end up raising the overall price of college tuition. I'm inclined to think that even driving down the cost of living might lead to the same result, as wages would inevitably drop, too.

Re: Re: Re: context matters
As others have said, the PGPD did originally claim to be going after the prostitutes directly, then changed their story once it started getting picked up. This pattern of going after prostitutes at least as much as the 'johns' is consistent with their previous 'busts'.

:) Thanks, I was going to comment about that empty thimble, too. I wouldn't personally attribute any quantity of moral authority to this (US) government.

Welcome to 1984.
Thanks for posting that list. Pretty scary how many completely legal businesses are on that list, to say nothing about the possible motives for 'banning' them.

Re:
Sick, isn't it? They try to argue that it's so helpful for law enforcement, so I suggest removing the data collection from the system, unless and only after a scanned plate matches an entry on their list, as this would provide LE with their potential benefit while removing most of the dangers, and yet they act like the sky will literally fall down if the data retention is removed or altered. So much for the presumption of innocence, among other things.
"...and given the track record of some officers out there one has to wonder if they won't just plant something to make it look like it was legit in the end when an innocent gets caught up in them playing with the toys."
Right, like when they burst into the wrong place, even if their original target is arguably legitimate.
Interesting idea about a group being paid by both sides, given that one would need to spoof both the public caller-id and the private caller-id, to have a chance of making that work.

Legitimate? Yes, absolutely.

Hehe, that's part of the problem. We don't have nearly enough actual responsible law enforcement agents.
