Really sorry about your students. Some people sometimes get in a very difficult position and it can be heartbreaking. That does not however excuse spouting ignorance.
By having more workers, we can produce more stuff more cheaply (which is exactly what economic growth is) which raises the general standard of living. Yes, some people are going to lose in the short term, but assuming you are smart hard working and flexible, you will benefit significantly from the growth.
The U.S. welcomes over one million legal immigrants to the U.S. every year. This is more than enough.
We cannot accomodate the billion plus people who want to come here immediately. Some will have to take no for an answer.
How do you know what is enough? And no, open borders would not mean that billions of people would show up. Immigrants are not stupid and they won't all show up unless they can find employment and a place to stay. If anything, land prices would prevent infinite immigration.
As for abolishing the minimum wage, you are describing bringing back legal slavery.
You would allow an employer to be able to tell someone, "You can work for scraps of food and a mat to sleep on the floor, or I will find someone from abroad who will."
So what you are saying is that there are some people who are in such a horrid situation that working for scraps of food and a mat is better than their currently horrific situation and your solution is to say: "Sorry, you can't even have food scraps and a mat. You'll just had to starve and sleep under a bridge." How generous of you.
France actually had a very familiar comedian run for the Presidency some time ago. When the polls started giving him as the winner he dropped out with a comment along the lines of: "You guys have got to be nuts."
I think you're being unfair to the Chinese Mike. Unlike ICE, they did not violate their citizens' constitutional rights when they took those websites down.
"I see absolutely no reason why a judge would not agree with the seizure."
And I see no reason why a judge would not agree with my seizure of all your assets. So let's just skip the part where we ask the judge and let's just go to the part where I take your stuff ok?
Actually, this is a perfectly sensible argument. If we pay people involved in education more they will perform better which will lead to better educational outcomes. If this merger goes through AT&T-T-Mobile will give this man a big paycheck for his support. Therefore, his performance will improve and so will educational outcomes. It's very clear.
I think the most telling thing is that they issued a "non-final rejection" first. Non-final? Seriously? Did they expect him to amend the claims to only include godly powers from the Hebrew god as claiming all godly powers would be overly broad?
Unfortunately I have no such delusions. I've grown to like country quite a bit and the more I do, the more I dislike the couple of jerks who are stomping on its principles in the name saving dying industries.
Prior restraint on speech without due process. It was totally unjustified to take the sites down without a lawsuit by abusing the asset forfeiture laws. I mean what were the website operators going to do to destroy evidence? Run away with the domain name? The only evidence that a domain name can ever provide is that person A paid so domain B would be connected to IP C. That information was recorded by the registrar and ICE could simply have asked for it. What ICE did was declare itself judge, jury and executioner. They deserve jail time for this wanton abuse of power.
"Were these sites not rife with illegal content, that to the naked eye would appear to be part of the site?"
Well actually no. In the United States and other civilized countries, people are deemed innocent until proven guilty. That fact that "to the naked eye" (You browse the web with your naked eye? That is so 1337!) there is some potentially infringing content does not mean we can throw away the basic principles of the justice system and seize property without any due process.
For one thing, there might not be any infringement. All the comments here are copyrighted material. Does that mean ICE should shutdown Techdirt? I have shelves of copyrighted materials in my home, does that mean ICE should be allowed to bust down my door and steal my books? I mean, some of them might look like they might be infringing. Copyrighted does not mean infringing. The only way to know if material is infringing is to go to court and let the two sides argue it out. In fact until a court declares the material infringing there was no infringement.
"Would the sites in question not exist for the major purpose of helping to prove access to illegally obtained content?"
I have no idea and honestly the only person allowed to make such a legal determination is a judge as part of a court case. But because ICE decided to just bat away this silly "due process" concept (who made up this annoying thing anyways) we just don't know. Another way to put this is: those ICE agents abused their authority and they deserve to go to jail and face steep monetary penalties.
I'd like to know what sites you are talking about. In civilized countries (like Western democracies) we have a couple of principles such as the rule of law and the presumption of innocence. The basic idea to paraphrase an internet principle: Conviction or it didn't happen.
Of course if you want to dump those principles, feel free. After all, I'm sure there won't be any mistake and no police officer will ever bust down your door and arrest you because you kind of look like a guy they are looking for.
And to be completely honest, yes, I think child pornography viewing should be a low priority fight. By the point child porn is being viewed, 99% of the damage has been done. The real place to fight is not on the internet but rather in real life where real children are really being harmed in part because federal agents are wasting time hunting down little electrical discharges on copper wires.
I really really hope some people from ICE go to jail. I know it won't happen, but I really hope they do. We should change the doctrine of qualified immunity and instead make officials personally responsible for their illegal actions. I'm sure a lot of people would act much more responsibly if they risked losing their house or or going to jail when they acted illegally.
Invasion of privacy? Really? I'm pretty sure Bin Laden's privacy rights became the least of this administration's worries when they ordered the SEALs to blow a hole in his compound and shoot him. If not, I'm pretty sure the part where they revealed to the media that they found his porn collection conclusively demonstrates that they don't care about his privacy rights. They are being hypocritical as always.
This isn't about some crazy conspiracy theory that Osama is alive and well running the CIA or some similar BS. This is about the government abusing national security privileges pretty egregiously. Basically, what Obama is saying is that we don't get to see that photo because it would make his job harder. Well tough. The government is beholden to the people, not the other way around. If Obama thinks it's too tough to run the executive branch transparently, he's welcome to go back to being a law school professor.
That's not how it works. By default, photos produced by the government are open to the public because we paid for it and the government works for us. The burden is on them to provide a very good reason why they should deny us what is rightfully ours. They have not. Their reasons are effectively: "It might make others feel bad and react violently." Let me tell you what else makes people react violently: When you shoot them and bomb their homes. Yet last time I checked the US does not give in to terrorist demands to withdraw from Afghanistan. Why is the US giving in to terrorists? This is at best cowardice.
I have an innovative idea: If people attack the US and kill US citizens in the process then those responsible would be... wait for it... the ones who killed the US citizens.
Interesting. In retrospect, I do recall reading Jason's comment but in all honesty, I cannot remember whether I came up with the joke while reading the original article or was later inspired by Jason's comment. Either way, let's give credit where it's due, I got a good laugh at your comment. Thanks.
Wait, my lawyer is calling me. Give me a second...
Boy was I wrong... Let me try again: Jason you thief! You stole my joke! You obviously hacked into my computer as I was taking notes for my favorites post! I was going to make exactly 3.14 billion dollars. I'm DMCAing Techdirt and suing you Jason for your reckless disrespect for copyright law. As for the rest of you who laughed at my stolen joke just remember that because laughter is inspired by the joke, you are technically performing the joke and owe me royalties. Gimme!
I don't doubt for an instance that Medvedev has ulterior motives for presenting that law. Remember, he's a politician (Spelled L-I-A-R). But, successful politicians ride the wave of public opinion. If the copyright minimalist ideas were not gaining ground, he would have picked a more popular way to achieve his goals. Also, when Russia does not fall into the sea, this will be bullet we can fire at the maximalists. Sure, it won't prove anything and it won't win the war, but all victories are made up of little steps. Also, if Russian consumers are actually able to start dodging intellectual monopolies because of that law, well, I for one will be quite happy for them. Who knows, maybe it will put a hole in the RIAA's lobbying budget.
