I see you're still attempting to use your pet term "Masnick Effect," hoping it catches on here and elsewhere, so that you'll have an excuse to edit-bomb Masnick's Wikipedia page again.
This douchebag happily downloads music offered for free by the artists, and doesn't listen to material produced by entitled whiners who expect monetary donations first.
But please do keep your hands off of my right to distribute my own music as I see fit, including charging a per copy royalty.
As you wish.
However, if it's your insistence for your music to not be heard, I would recommend not releasing it in the first place. It would stop that whole "piracy" problem in its tracks.
Seriously, you must have an extremely high opinion of your abilities to think that anyone will be willing to pay for the "privilege" of listening to your music when they can obtain music for free elsewhere...and legally, no less.
Actually, as traditional record labels continue to decline, independent artists will eventually become mainstream. When that happens, I think there will still be millionaire rock stars...they'll just be self-made.
However, this should not be any real musician's goal. Focus on the music, not "making it." If you can play a show of any size and win over the audience, then you have already "made it."
This on a site that supports copyright violators left and right, supports the sites that clearly aim to provide that material, and those who strive to make sure those sites stay online.
To say that most here actively support such sites is to overstate. Rather, I think they're just considered the lesser of two evils. I'd certainly rather associate with copyright infringers than anyone who works in the recording industry.

TechDirt Users: "Industries come and go, chief."
AC: "But the recorded music industry has been decimated by piracy, plain and simple! Look at the record stores..."
TDU: "Could that be because nobody listens to records anymore? Or cassettes? Or CDs?"
AC: "You're all full of FUD! The recorded music industry has been decimated..."
TDU: "You do know 'decimated' means to reduce by one tenth, right?"
AC: "But...FUD...and...and...freetards..."
TDU: "Go ahead, you know you want to say it..."
AC: "...BUT COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT!!!"
TDU: "And there's our laugh for the day..."

Why, exactly, is that a "'nuff said"? Are you making some greater point, or are you just being a self-righteous, judgmental ass?

Smaller labels will probably stick around, but even they'll play less or a role after the majors die out.
