I'm kind of loving it. Massive overreach eventually results in massive backlash.
There's a little voice in my head when i read these, it sounds like Cory Doctorow: "now you have two problems".
I wonder which will happen first, backlash, or a the judge having a ragegasm and popping a blood vessel because that damned interwebz won't bow to his will.
To be fair, a space mining consortium that came from "a couple google billionaires, a microsoft billionaire, and some astronauts", is likely to be the best chance of us ever getting out of Low Earth Orbit. Government is sure as hell never going to get us off this rock.
I for one would like to welcome our new/old Google overlords.
yes, not many stories mention it, because they do mention that the actual complaint is precisely the opposite. Publishers see amazon pricing as far to low, and say they cannot hope to compete with ten dollar ebooks.
That was the point i started laughing to hard to finish the article. Let them merrily piss off down the rabbit hole.

I have a kindle, but none of my books came from amazon. anytime i get a book that's in a non .mobi format i can convert it with calibre in a few seconds, or from .mobi into something else.
Is that the drm, or do actual kindle books have something else keeping them from being treated like any other file?
precisely. i'm willing to chip a buck or two, straight to the author, anything more than that for a file i'll delete from my kindle 5 minutes after i finish it, and i'm headed for demonoid.
So apparently i had completely misunderstood the point...or pu9blishers have.
I was reading an article yesterday, that talked about how the big issue for publishers is amazon setting ebook prices too LOW.
And they want to be able to sell them for MORE. There was some talk about 9.99 being the amazon price point. I'd assumed this big pricefixing case was about the fact that these are digital copies, requiring no binding, shipping, printing, etc. and therefor were masively overpriced.
Here's the thing, 10 bucks for a file i'm going to delete off my kindle 30 seconds after i finish reading it is laughable. So, i'm going to have to go with "no, none of them have a clue wtf is going on, and intend to price themselves right out of the market."
yarr maties. i'll just have to keep buying my favorite authors drinks at conventions instead.
i'm 100% the same way. Video is dead (dead as in it's not indexable, or searchable, or easily skimmable, or linkable to and from). Entertainment, that's ok...if i want to watch it, i'm going to watch it, but anything factual, or instructional, no way.
If it's over 3 minutes long, it needs a transcript attached.
that being said, i watch tv when i've got a baby in hand or soemthing, because juggling a book, a bottle, and a 6 month old is just a bitch.
