while deregulation can help improve functional, competitive, healthy markets
This only works in very limited way. Capitalism is driven via two primary pressures:
Expansion (healthy: offering something the competition doesn't vs. unhealthy: buying the competition).
Reducing costs/increasing revenue
Number 2 works only as long as #1 doesn't. The moment there aren't enough competitors to keep the players actually competing (on price, service, quality, etc), then price will increase and service & quality will decrease.
Capitalism has built-in pressures to drive down to zero expenses and drive up to maximum revenue.
Government regulation can cap prices, forcing companies to compete on service, quality and amenities. Anyone who flew before deregulation knows what I'm talking about.
Without any regulation, #1 results in Lord of the Flies cannibalism.
You need to pay us for making people want your service.
THIS.
Netflix can just throw up a screen for anyone from that ISP that says:
"Sorry, but due to lack of license payment by your ISP, Netflix is not available via this connection. Please call your ISP at (phone) or email them at (ISP president's email) or tweet/insta/whatever to tell them how you feel about their failure to pay for Netflix. We are sorry this is happening and want to restore service as soon as possible, but need your help."
Completely at odds with Republican philosophy for the past half century
Perhaps you haven't been paying attention. Ever since St. Raygun, the GOP has been all about power at any costs and satisfying their donors at the expense of everyone else. Citizens United put nitrous in the fuel and turned them even harder at getting all the coins into the rich people's and corporations' pockets.
They think they can hold on to power by playing to the 21% of Americans who voted for The Great Orange Hope in 2020, and as long as the Dems continue to suck and blow, the GOH will continue to be successful.
libertarian news commentator and self-proclaimed supporter of free markets and deregulation.
A libertarian is simply a racist conservative who wants to smoke weed.
They despise the fact that some of the government budget goes to making PoC's lives easier. If the government was for and by cis white males only, they'd be fine with it. If not, then they want to burn it all down...until they don't.
But beyond that, Stossel is arguing against his own personal beliefs.
Not really. The gab in libertarian logic is they don't believe the state should have power over citizens (cis white males)—i.e., the courts and police forces— which leaves firearms as the only way to uphold their "rights". They know deep down they wouldn't survive such a society, so they don't have a problem using state power for their own ends.
This is symptomatic of the last decades of corrosive rule -- of putting winning at all costs to appease a small minority of oligarchs over the majority of citizens.
When FDR was faced with a social backlash to the wreckage of the Gilded Age, he helped out the average work-a-day folks with a raft of (gasp) Social programs. This lesson was not institutionalized, instead it was derided, demonized and dismantled as soon as possible.
Since 1978, purchasing power has stagnated; standards of living have slipped and more money and power has flowed upwards. Without a fair rule of law, we unwashed masses have literally nowhere to go to address our grievances. Our politicians are bought-and-sold. We can no longer rely on the courts. What's next?
With the total takeover, I'm interested to see if they don't accidentally kill off the golden goose.
If Xi Jinping is happy to loot HK's current wealth with no desire to keep it producing, then he'll continue on his present course. If they're not careful, they'll supplant actual wealth generatioin for the Lysenkoism-equivalent
Beating down a dead horse doesn't make it any less dead
Perhaps even more noteworthy is another report noting that TikTok has overtaken YouTube in average watch time in both the US and UK.
Everyone has different motivations, of course, but the fact that I have to wade through preroll ads (sometimes more than one, sometimes unskippable) for EVERY DAMN VIDEO PLAY, makes me less likely to watch stuff on Youtube.
Ghost of Quibi, I have about a 5-10 minute tolerance for any random video. It seems vids on YouTube are getting longer (I wish the wadsworth parameter still worked) and less-enticing.
What's their end game? I mean, obviously it is to completely loot the public largesse and pay nothing in taxes, but how do they expect the country to even function if that happens?
Nazi-lovin' Henry Ford at least recognized if he raised his worker salaries, he'd make even more money when they all bought his cars.
As part of the Aug. 26 order for forensic analysis of Brookman’s devices, Noble acknowledged that Brookman has already replaced the computer and cellphone he was using to run his watchdog site in 2019, when the alleged defamation was taking place.
The judge has also heard testimony that neither Brookman nor Google, which hosts his blog, have the IP addresses of the commenters. However, a digital forensic expert for Benvenuto argued in court filings that Brookman’s new computer and phone could still help identify the people.
Is that "forensic expert" part of CyberNinja?
The blog is hosted on Blogger/Blogspot, which likely means all of the data in on Google's servers. I suppose these idiots think they can access that data magically if they have the guy's laptop and cell phone, but if he logs out of google from all his devices and changes the password, they're SOL.
I swear to god these people are too stupid to do anything, except annoy folks unnecessarily.
If they're buying their internet from the cable company already, and they want to watch TV of some kind, it makes sense to get the cable package
I'm stuck in a monopoly situation, so I have a single choice of ISP. That being said, their TV bundles are expensive, steaming piles of crap. I am quite happy to keep my existing streaming (Netflix/Amazon Plus) and will subscribe for a single month to Disney+ whenever they have something good that I can binge within that time.
Banks, we'll [sic] the not lazy ones anyways, subdivide user data into seperat[e] databases on independent drives on different servers.
This is the direction they should all go. Specifically, the sensitive data (SSN, DL, all other PII) should each be stored in its own table, encrypted and protected with access controls, stored procedures and triggers to only allow access in authorized ways and by authorized accounts.
If implemented correctly, it should not be possible to do something like SELECT ssn FROM ssns; (i.e., it would fail if more than one record was returned), and a plain old SELECT * FROM users WHERE ID='c2b10e7f-2739-4701-b50b-9f837d7eadb8'; should not contain any PII.
Yeah, it won’t work. If someone breaks a law from the host’s country (yet legal in their country), what do you do? What about vice versa?
This is the inevitable conundrum for EVERY moderately-popular web service. There are too many countries, each with their own laws, some of which contradict other countries’ laws, to be able to adhere to them all. Each country will assert their sovereignty over their citizens, regardless of what website they’re using.
I suppose one could try to restrict everything and only allow what every country allows—good luck! At least it will provide permanent employment to small armies of international lawyers.
Just wait for Frank Talk, er Frank Speech to open their doors and it'll all be there!
"We are not going to be worried about Amazon taking it down, or YouTube or Google or Apple, and we are going to get our voice of free speech out there... you are not going to have to worry about what you are saying and being able to speak out freely."
Lindell claimed there will be a "good reporting system" in place when the site launches and said the mission statement about free speech guidelines had been created based on the definitions set by the "Founding Fathers and the Supreme Court and stuff."
