We didn't pay the British civilians, Confederate civilians, and barely compensated Native Americans for their battle losses either.
Damages in battle are different that damages in law enforcement. Unfortunately, too many LEO's believe they are fighting battles instead of enforcing laws, and the militarization of the police only fuels this.
As an example: Richard Stengel’s opinions on free speech make me plenty pissed off. But he should absolutely have the right to express them (and the Washington Post should have every right to publish/host them) without government interference.
I find Stengel's speech to be hateful to the First Amendment...does that mean we get to outlaw his speech too?
The glaring flaw in the hate speech isn't protected speech argument is who gets to decide what qualifies as hate speech. One man's hate speech is another man's mantra.
Then there's Deputy Goforth who has stood by and allowed Wilkey to violate rights. Hopefully that will hurt him just as much as these lawsuits will hurt Deputy Wilkey.
I hold out a faint hope that they will end up in prison, so they can experience the hurt of anal tearing that they inflicted.
Then the cynic in me kicks in and I fear that they will just become the next contestants on the Cop Job Merry-go-round
You can damn well bet id the government was looking for the information requested as part of an investigation, they wouldn't have missed a single item in the scope of their search.
Re: The problem is more hard limits than anything else
I'd say the problem is that the government and people in it think they actually know how to fix a problem, and have the power to make their views into law.
Here's a solution. Set yourself up as a corporation that supplies articles to news outlets and pay yourself as an employee.
Seriously? Then you would have to pay corporate income tax, personal income tax and unemployment insurance along with a few other things I'm probably forgetting.

The only enforcement the federal government is good at is enforcing the laws that allow them to lock people up and seize their assets.

Deputy Wilkey certainly seems like he's in a race to be declared the winner of the most Idiotic Qualified Immunity Award.

From that article, CA is one of the few states that tax pass thru income to both the business and the individual. Double taxation at it's best.
