"In any case who needs Hulu when you have The Pirate Bay?"
Because searching for and streaming videos is much faster, easier and more reliable than downloading shows from PB. The upside to PB is that you can keep what you download and you can find things that you can't find on legitimate sites like Hulu, I realize, but Hulu has (had?) value that PB doesn't. If you can't see that, then that's your loss.
Wow. Where to start with this bit of incoherent drivel. First off show me where there are "other people profiting from there music." Because no one profits from file sharing Metallica's music.
Secondly, no one is debating where Metallica ranks against other musicians, so this whole section of your rant is extraneous.
Thirdly, Metallica's stage show is huge because they charge more than most other bands with smaller stage setups, and still make a boatload off touring, so downloading hasn't hurt that one bit. What's your point in bringing this up?
Fourthly, what's a "Butt stop?" And no one is complaining about them making money. Did you even RTFA? Are you a complete moron, or just a partial moron? Can you even put together one complete sentence with proper capitalization, spelling, grammer and punctuation?
I suspect you are either very young or developmentally dissabled.
Why are so many people confused on how to spell "lose"? At least once a day in these comments I see someone (the same person maybe?) talking about "loosing" something. Is it the European way to spell lose? Like "colour"? Really it's not that tricky of a word...
I haven't heard anybody say anything about "abolishing" copyright. Mike and most so called "copyleftists" want to LIMIT copyright, not get rid of it.
But honestly, why should Metallica care if someone else starts performing their songs (which often happens; they're called tribute bands)? It's (again) free publicity for them, and it's not like nobody would recognize if someone tried to pass off one of Metallica's songs as one of their own.
Any band that tried to pass of the song as an original would lose credibility with their fans once the fraud was discovered.
At the end of the article it talks about how this "study" will be important for setting public policy. I sure hope not. But I'm sure all the anti VVG nuts will parrot this study as if it was delivered by Moses coming down from Mt. Sinai.
"They see a definite $1.6m from sales or a *possible* (and risky) $1.6m+ from giving it away."
Are you sure they don't see it as, "We've made $1.6m from album sales. Just think how much we'd have made if it wasn't for those pirates!"?
What I'd like to do is track their earnings from 1990 to 2000 and see what effect the internet had on their overall earnings, album profits in particular. Did they really see a significant dip in album profits starting with Napster's surge in popularity around 1998? If so did overall profits decrease, increase or stay the same?
This is...stunningly stupid. I can't fathom how you can twist hacking Google into IP infringement. Now I see why the RIAA is going down in flames. With this bafoon at the helm, the Hindenburg had a better chance of survival.

"All games should implement this with an auto save before checking"
That's certainly the publisher's right. Just like it is the right of gamers to not buy those crappy games that are more of a hassle to use than the games made by the competition. See that's the beauty of the free market. By all means, make poor decisions if that's what you think is best. The market will just buy from those who make better decisions.
Perhaps instead of name calling potential customers, you should use that time to learn a bit about basic economics.
"What if I wanted to buy a $0.99 cheeseburger from McDonald's and they tried to convince me that $0.99 was too little because of the beef ranchers, and dairy farmers?"
I'd gladly pay you $.99 on Tuesday for a cheeseburger today.
"They won't keep these servers going forever, so if I want to play a game 17 years after it came out (I just played through the original Doom again yesterday) I am out of luck, though I paid for it?"
What they'll probably end up doing is selling a cheaper non DRM'd version in a couple of years. Maybe those who have proof of purchase will get a discount on the non-DRM version once it's released. Probably not.
What's more disconcerting is the fact that you won't be able to play without an internet connection now. Not everybody even has internet, or access to it full time. What about when you're traveling? Want to play AC2 on a plane? Better hope they have WiFi on the flight that you now have to pay for.
You know as soon as the students with these laptops heard about this, they immediately started mentally going over all the things they might have done with the laptop open. I know what sort of things I did when I was alone in my room as a teenager, and that would be pretty embarassing to think of the school administrators watching me. I wonder if the lawsuit will include mental anguish damages.
