None of the esteemed Author's Guild authors are bad authors. In fact they're so good that everyone wants to pirating them, which is why they can't make a living.
Authors Guild survey shows that approximately 67% of our authors earn less than the poverty level from their writing.
I would like to ask the Author's Guild to make certain much-needed changes to their membership. How about you only let writers join you're guild if they can actually make a living at writing? Then you won't have to complain that two-thirds of your members can't make a living.
To be fair, Peter Gabriel did an awful lot to get those world music artists into record stores through Realworld. And David Byrne did too to a much lesser extent. But yes, their own music should be nowhere near there.
For Turkewitz, art is simply something to be invested in, like technology or oil or pork bellies. You take a risk and hope for a return. Without legal protections and a stable commercial market, the risk become incalculable and therefore not worth taking.
Nevermind that art is also culture, free speech, history, fashion, philosophy, and just fun - all things that do not ask for or want a return on investement.
The point isn't what they should do with their own work. The point is being hypocritical about it - esp. from someone that's so acutely aware of hypocrisy.
