I sent an email to the editor (from the link), and got a call back. Basically, the situation is more nuanced than the article leads on. The woman was very polite, too. However, she didn't understand copyright infringement at all. She thought it was copyright infringement - assuming the individual linking the video as the owner as well, even after I tried to explain to her twice that it wasn't the case. I'm not sure if she actually understood or not.
what do you mean? Cory Doctorow makes 8% on ebooks at least per his essay on content. I guess it depends on how big you are? What is the number you had in mind DH?
please. amazon isn't the main ebook outlet by a long shot. They're just one company who wants people to believe they're the main outlet.
Publishers will soon realize that $10 even for an ebook is not worth it considering you don't even own what they are calling a purchase, plus it's DRM locked and all.
Best bet would be to do a $5/mo all you can eat ebook strategy which would *SHUDDER* gain customers! What an idea! Can you believe it might even be more sustainable since the money comes in steadily? Oh right, that might lead to reality: books will end up free and distributed.
book publishers are even worse than mpaa/riaa in their sheer ignorance. They just want to keep a high price on their works as they think everyone will agree on the publisher's own value, but value is not something anyone ever agrees on.
I imagine this is quite a legal grey area, but only because it's probably not been debated a lot. However, the developer isn't as much a douchebag as his company is, really. This is like when a lawyer tries to claim copyright of their DMCA notices.
Oh, and facts aren't copyrightable, no? Thus, how can a SQL query be anything but a fact to a point.
as a tech family, I watch approximately 2 shows on TV that I absolutely could watch without one: family guy and the cleveland show. that's it. Nothing else on tv is entertaining or anything other than crap to me, really. I could easily watch the episodes elsewhere and the TV is used almost exclusively for downloaded movie watching basically.
durbin has been corrupt from day one. his ass will do anything for a little lobbying and it's been known for years. If there is one senator who needs some karma returned to him, it's durbin.
bingo, BSOD probably is only for those who fail WGA, which would mean only the people who legitimately purchased an OS from them. Which would exclude everyone I know and explain why none of them have had a BSOD :P
I mean honestly, these companies are making more than $1M each. Did our dumb Mr. Cuban really think these companies are going to take a simple million to give up more than $1M/year in revenue? They'd probably have to agree to a million *every year* just to make up for a million in revenue, and since it's companies that pay tax I'm sure they'd want to make up for say 50 years of revenue plus tax?
Suddenly the magic idea doesn't seem so viable, as that'd be in the potential trillions for the top thousand as i'm sure they make more than a mil a year.
technically, the only thing fair use shouldn't calculate in use is anything copyright does. Thus if our total economy is 8 trillion and copyright is 1.5, then 6.5 is fair use, since fair use encompasses everything else, really, every business in more ways than people realize.
Kurt has defended himself all over on twitter. Beyond the immediate response, I fail to see what harm or reason justifies telling the school's IP address what the commenter had done.
