"If the government needs to 'step in' to help your business model, maybe you shouldn't be in business."
Everyone should be, and is, whether they know it or not, "in business." I would rephrase this as:
"If the government needs to 'step in' to help your business model, maybe you should be in a different business."
Also, we need to stop using "business" and "capitalism" as synonyms. There is a lot of business these days that is not capitalism, but if you attack it you get attacked back for attacking capitalism.
Obviously they object to the word shakedown. It is an accusation of illegal behavior. Although that may be correct, it would have been smarter to use another word, such as overreaching.
Already, inventors effectively have "advocates" who argue for them that a patent is valid, so why not create the same sort of thing on the other side -- setting up a true adversarial process -- by seeking out experts who can explain why something may be obvious.
Yes, there definitely should be an advocate for the public's ownership of prior art.
Since I frequently advocate voting with my dollars elsewhere when unhappy with corporate behavior, it would be hypocritical not to do so in a positive manner when I am pleased instead!
As angry as I am about Obama/Democratic Party complicity in IP bullshit, the stain is worse on Romney for having actually run an Olympics. You couldn't possibly come so close to that kind of corruption without getting it on yourself as well.
Agree, and I never want to see that crappy Mom/bear picture again. Does anyone think it is funny or witty? It certainly does not warrant reproducing on the front page.
It's one thing to chide someone for overreacting to internet criticism if they try to use IP laws for censorship, and that's newsworthy. But let's not give continued provocation like this so much press. Stay above the fray.
When I recommend Techdirt to my friends and this is what they see they click away before they get a look at the scary stuff. It detracts from your message and makes Techdirt look less serious.
In all the cyber sci-fi novels there is always some company that trades in information, databases, etc. The more exclusive the info, the higher the price, the more people try to hack it, etc.
All these newspaper companies fancy themselves as this sort of information dealer. But the reason no one pays for their information is because it's crap -- even with all their so-called professional journalists. That's because all the professional journalists are corrupt or co-opted. So if the journalistic truth challenges the status quo power structure it isn't reported. There's your pink slime, Mr. Newhoff.
Now, if these companies actually told the truth no matter what, that would be worth paying for. But as it is, they want to feed you a plate of dogshit and charge you for a steak.
