I can't stand government! Its one thing if little Billy rolls over and gives in to their crazy demands, but when a city falls to these kinds of things, it makes me disgusted. Don't cities have lawyers? or at least people who can tell them that the MPAA can't pin it on them, let alone PROVE that it happened in the first place?
No no, I believe Mike's summary isn't 100% accurate. Disk imaging is fine; that is not the issue. Psystar edited the OS X kernel to allow it to boot on non apple hardware. The court determined that this was infringement. Psystar then used this master image to install on other machines, which was additional infringement.
Psystar may have included a copy of OS X with each clone, but what they installed on the clones was not OS X, but a modified operating system that infringed on Apple's OS X
When I see consumer friendly companies patent very anti-consumer type technology, I like to believe that they patent this technology with the intention of not using it, and preventing others from using it as well. I guess thats just wishful thinking tho
I see you upped the horsepower in your car. You can now speed, so I'm revoking its street privileges. You can still drive it on your own property and on tracks, but you can't use it on the roads where everyone else drives. Hell, cars are getting cheap enough, you should just get some clunker so you can drive one on a track, and the other on the road.
But seriously, WTF? You own something, you can do whatever you want with it. If M$ wants to kick cheaters off XBOX Live, thats fine, but they should have to PROVE that person x had cheated. You shouldn't be limited as to what you can do with something you own.
I hope Comcast doesn't find out I have a VCR! They might cut off my TV service since I can use the VCR to STEAL!!!!111!!1 their TV
That was never the issue. This mandate was much more than a simple credit card reader, and I am upset that this wasn't researched.
The cabbies were forced to have these new electronic systems installed into their cars, at a cost to them of $7000 over 3 years. They also had concerns of not having their vehicle for a week while the system was installed. The biggest concern was the integrated GPS that tracks their every move.
Only a small part was actually about the credit card transaction, they were worried about the CC fee, but there were bigger things to worry about...
Remember, Musicians don't make a dime off of radio play. For musicians, it is free publicity, so they don't get paid. The songwriters are the ones who get paid, since nobody would otherwise know they wrote the song, so radio play not a promotion of the songwriter.
At least, I think thats how it works. I may have made that up...
Radio won't be fighting webcasting fees directly, but by having Pandora push to have Radio fees upped, it is bringing a much more powerful ally to the table. Pandora doesn't have the resources to fight for itself, so if it can help get this fee instituted, there will be an outrage from the radio industry. I think Pandora (along with other webcasters) could then ride along and say "We deserve the same as them, we're radio too"
I think this is a decent plan, and seeing the ways Pandora has bent over backwards to stay alive, I'd like to think this is a strategical move and not a spiteful one.

I think Dan Bull has it right. His songs are all available for a free download. If you like what you hear, you can choose to buy the CD or mp3s later.
Instead of fighting piracy, which can never work, and instead angers fans, Dan Bull would rather promote himself by giving his own music away.
I would like to go out now and buy his CD
