it didn't offend me. my sarcasm-o-matic is broken it seems. take me entire previous comment with a healthy does of /s (or sarcmark (all rights reserved, patent pending))
So instead of discussing the article at hand, you take one sentence out and use that in some kind of effort to discredit the article in whole?
By ignoring the actual problem, you agree with SCAMP that 30 seconds worth of a song is a performance. You must be a joy to have at kids pageants. You just stand at the back door demanding payment for the "artists", don't you?
I find that hilarious: "choose to be legitimate."
I don't have to make that choice and yet, I am still "legitimate."
Thankfully, since I built three of my computers and denied the EULA on my netbook, I don't technically own a Windows license at all. (BTW: Acer will not refund the cost of Windows on netbooks. That should be illegal.)
I'm a Linux user and bought two copies of the bundle (one for me and one for my brother) both times I put over double the Linux average, and the copy I bought for me I put over three times the Linux average.
Any asshole who thinks us Linux users want everything for free are idiots. This may be shocking, but some of us actually just plain prefer a Linux environment over a Windows or OSX one. It doesn't have to be this big conspiracy or whatever. Or it can be. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

I got ATT's cheaper data rate plan, it is like 65$ a month for some limited phone, unlimited text, and 500mb data. Frankly I am almost never away from wifi anyway.
My guess is that open source repositories will all be based outside the US and it will be much like the reverse of cryptology from last decade (it was/is illegal to export encryption technologies because of some asinine 1950's law). This time they will be based out of other countries and the people running the server will turn a blind eye to americans downloading the code and binaries.
I am surprised nobody mentioned Neal Stephenson's book, Cryptonomicon. In it a group of techies get the capital to create a "data haven". The location was a tiny island country with a gigantic wwII bunker converted to a damn near nuke proof datacenter. the king of the island was all but bought off and fat, redundant pipes were laid from multiple countries to it. The laws of the country were changed to where government (inside and out) can't touch the data.
It is a brilliant idea. Nothing is monitored, and nothing is illegal. Anything goes. completely secure transfers in and out and no auditing. That is what we need.
So you are saying that because of that, that paywalls are obviously the only sane course? We are saying that paywalls are obviously an insane course of action. There may be better ways to make money online other than advertisment. Paywalls are not that.
I understand that corporations are not required to respect free speech like the government is, but shouldn't they? Shouldn't I be able to say what I want, where I want, and when I want? I think freedom of speech, being a right(not a privilege) should mean that no one should be able to tell me what I can and can not say. Regardless of whether that someone is a government, a corporation or another citizen.
