I've always thought there needed to be Better Negotiating on the contract
As someone who has aspirations of being an author, both fiction and some textbooks(CS, programming, etc). I thought of what I'll offer the book publishers. This might be a pie in the sky dream... but here it is:
1) no upfront payment (I will write the book in my own time)
2) I retain the copyright, They only publish is for a set amount of time. (say 5 years).
3) Future books would have the same deal. So, each would have a 5 year deal with them.
4) During that time I receive some percentage of the sales (NOT PROFIT{gotta avoid MPAA accounting})... lets say 10% (I really don't know what % right now offhand. I'd have to look more into that before I went to a publisher
5) ... not sure how to handle signing for multiple books right now.. but still just some thoughts I had on the issue. I'm sure I'd be able to find someone to publish for that... or I could use www.lulu.com to allow people to buy my book in whatever (paper/hard)-back version they want... and just go from there....
Actually we only see a slice of "Humanity" in these shows, it is discussed often, but from afar. We only see those in StarFleet.. b/c only those people lead the interesting lives(storyline was) and it is basically the Military Wing of the Federation(who also does exploration/science...which isn't unusual ... cough DARPA...cough). There are TONS of people(human and alien) who are not part of federation. Only those in Starfleet (and their families on DS9/TNG) are part of the world we often see in the Star Trek shows. Also, they are the only ones who live a utopian lifestyle like that. Others live much more like we do now, with goods being transferred by merchants, etc.
Plus this entire discussion is missing one VERY important aspect. Replicators do NOT replicate everything perfectly, or even at all. They do not replicate Di-lithium Crystals... as an example... (The entire point of the nuclear submarine subplot in one movie)
So everyone seems to be missing those points... And now I super nerdy for correcting Star Trek people on Star Trek :( ... but ehh... Plus I think alcohol was one of the biggest things that wasn't synthesizable(possibly by design)... so right there is MAJOR product that would still need to be grown/etc.
Disturbed did something similar for disabled at concert
I was at a local show with Disturbed and there was a guy with two crutches(the permanent ones that wrap around the forearm) and he was next to a mosh pit and the lead singer saw this and called him a real BadA** and brought him up on stage (to sit off to stage left). Then they went ahead and did the same for everyone with a wheelchair or crutches, and there was 2 more people there with wheelchairs (this was kinda a small venue). When 10 Thousand Fists came out, to put it in a time frame if anyone cares.
This act was a small gesture, but still makes me enjoy the memory of the concert, which would make me more interested in going and seeing them again(and it's also a great PR move too(I'm talking about them/then)).
It seems kind of bizarre to cite a ruling in which you lost badly, as a reason why others need to do something that the court said iiNet didn't have to do.
Sadly, no it doesn't. In what other part of their business practices have any 'anti-piracy' or recording industry groups shown a willingness to accept any reality that doesn't fit the one they want.
From the Wikipedia article on Truthiness:
"Truthiness is a "truth" that a person claims to know intuitively "from the gut" without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or facts."
That sounds exactly like what AFACT is doing here...
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: But this is EXACTLY what you wanted
I'd purposely run a TOR node just to screw with my ISP if this happens.
Either that, or host more Linux ISOs than the MPAA/RIAA can stake a stick at....
Sucks for them that I don't pirate films of music. I buy legit music CDs for the creative work I do. and rip songs off Shoutcast for my non-commercial personal use.. (and they are in separate directories, so I can keep them strait. Any lawyer would have a field day defending me from a false accusation.
1) Mess a great service up (Napster, and others Turntable.fm)
2) Go Overboard(sued an Amish family for file sharing...)
3) Cry Foul, especially when no crying is needed
4) Not go after Apple's DB of info on electronic version of files (which in this case happen to be MP3s) which are ALL stored in a neat-little-single place
5) Use #4's info to sue everyone under the sun
6) ???
7) Profit
Think of the poor starving Artist's family, how would an author's grandchildren be able to make money off of a work their grandfather wrote if it weren't for Copyright's continual extension?
How dare you not be concerned for future grandchildren who would miss out on the ability to profit from, or expand upon their grandfather's works.
That last 1% ... Which is why people justify cell phones, to provide a means of help in an emergency. I said 'Justify' not 'have' cell phones. People 'have' them because most of the US isn't covered by wifi, and heck... land wise... I don't think over 90%(randomly picked #, it's probably lower, but ehh) of it is covered by cell phones. But thats mostly areas where there is no population (which would then require sat phones).
If everyone lived in Judge Dredd 'Mega Cities', then YES, cell service would be useless, but thats not how the US is. The population density of a LOT of the US is super tiny compared to large cities.
The funniest part is that you didn't catch that I was implying that taxes aren't bad, and "shouldn't" be abolished...
Which is not a GOP POV. I gave possible alternative stances which would actually be beneficial to the discussion, such as "My personal share of taxes are too high" or "High taxes drive away businesses". These arguments at least could contribute to a discussion about tax policy. Just saying they are "just plain wrong" is the GOP-Faux-News-astro-turf-Koch-brothers-tea-party point of view.
And wanting someone to give a more well thought out argument than "taxes are evil" isn't "GOP Newspeak", it is being tired of people not being involved in the running of their government and only spouting off catch phrases that fit on bumper stickers.
Plus... You got it backwards... if you are going to insult someone, at least understand which angle they are talking from. You should have called me a "Marxist Socialist Commie" instead. lol
Yeah, I'd hate to have clean water, clean air, safe neighborhoods, be rescued from a fire, or have safe roads that are in working condition, or let alone a military...
Taxes are not "plain wrong" ,nor should they be abolished.
Perhaps you feel that your personal share of taxes is too high or that you feel that high taxes drive away businesses, which (ignoring either point's validity) are at least some kind of talking points about policy.
Try to actually add to discussions, not just rhetorical comments that have no real basis in any real discussion about a topic. K. Thanks :)
First thing you learn to do when securing a PHP/etc website is to block SQL injections... FIRST THING... I mean ... ABSOLUTE FIRST... maybe after using a firewall, and not using plain text passwords... but it isn't like SONY would fail at any of these 3..........
... so exactly what most users would be able to use without having to teach them anything. The Browser issue isn't an issue at all on Android, due it being able to install any Application you want to be your browser. Default functionality being bland(but working) isn't necessarily a bad thing. Adoption of Android with non-techies is for a reason, these things are important. (just not to us, lol )
The target devices is the key dividing line between these two devices.
Android is for everything that isn't a PC/Laptop/Netbook
Chrome is for the Laptop/Netbook market. (I don't see a Desktop/Workstation replacement right now from GOOG)
Having a full keyboard, with a mouse is an entirely different experience than that of a touch screen. Potentially down the road a hybrid GUI/IO system might evolve, but for now... we have two camps: Computer vs Other.
As someone who has looked heavily at Dalvik (Android's internal virtual machine), I believe we will see things like that (if not Dalvik itself) merging into a standard Linux distribution. This would provide another layer of security and sand boxing above and beyond what is already available in browsers. Chrome on Android or Dalvik on ChromeOS, either way, we'll see a better platform for computing.
I think this is more of a "proper tool for the job" issue right now than an internal split. And... Google doesn't want to admit that there is a difference in 'jobs'(tasks, etc) out there, because it doesn't want to limit itself in the future(Which to Google is next quarter).
Overall Android is/was a much bigger tech jump than previous embedded device OSs than ChromeOS is compared to laptop/netbook OSs. But, that doesn't mean that ChromeOS doesn't fill a really nice niche right now, I'm debating buying one of these for my mom (and might do so). ChromeOS is "just different enough to be 'neat', but not different enough to scare away" people who don't care about tech, tech policy, Computer Science, etc. And that is really a key issue with most consumers.
Yes, but the Army has better situation than the TSA
The Army has rules against that, but you will be immediately put in the Army's jail for refusing an order, and only after a (non-civilian)trial will you be possibly found not-guilty, if others find your orders were illegal.
The same is true of civil person leaving a job, you "can" do it if you want, but you still have to face the immediate consequences of being without a job (vs being in jail in the military). However, unlike the military, you do not even have a chance at 'justice' because you don't have the trial to look forward to. Potentially the moral justice might be a win, but...
Actually _you_ have a couple failings in your logic, not me.
First, People who work low income wages do not generally have time to try and find other jobs... the term is called "working poor", they are working, but they don't make enough to be able to go to the grocery store and buy the food they want/need without worrying if they have enough money (thats my personal definition of having enough money)
Secondly, "YOU are ultimately responsible for your actions" is true, but if you have a low income job and do not have any money saved up you are essentially an indentured servant.. And thats the point, They can't risk losing their job (especially in this market) because then they do not know if they will be able to provide for their family. (Personally, I believe this is why many companies pay working-poor wages, to keep their employees from being able to look for other jobs(or it might just be a nice coincidence for scum jobs, i dunno), I worked a job like this once) The moral question of: is it better to ruin someone else's 'rights'(which they have signed away by going to the airport and buying tickets... which is a whole other issue) or to allow your family to become desolate. That question I can not answer, and hope never to have to. So that is why I say the congressional members who approve/request this type of action be targeted (for political, legal action)
Third, Pay doesn't increase if you get a few desperate people to work a job when the majority of the rest of the people have a moral blockade against it. This is why we have TSA agents in the first place with low wages. The same is true of the Rat killers in India, it is a sacrilegious act to kill rats, but the job needs done, so people go against their religion to get a paycheck to provide for their families.
And about the Sheriff arresting those who are legally unable to be married... I think we have a huge legal battles over that right now with the LGBT community. Unfortunately, many of our laws are/have not meant to be _truly_ morally acceptable, they are meant to be morally acceptable to those in power and often are actually religiously acceptable reasons and cloaked in the guise of other reasonings.
Perhaps you should insert "Congressional Member who uses the 'Terror-boogie-man' to pass anything they want" in that statement instead of "TSA agent"
... come on...
These people don't like their jobs as much as you don't like their job. They don't make much money, and they are only doing it to be able to support their families, etc.
