So... given that "ignorance is no excuse", we will be prosecuted to the full extent allowable under the secret interpretation of law made by the secret court in secret, which we had absolutely no way of knowing about?
This makes me so happy to be an independent author with complete control over my books. If any publication site tried to inflict DRM like this on me without giving me a "turn it the hell off" option, I'd drop that distributor like third period French, as the saying goes.
If any of the "big guys" decide that this is a good idea (I can only imagine John Scalzi's reaction!) I guess I'll be reading more Baen books again.../div>
I posted a very similar comment to yours approximately 5 minutes before you did, and thus I am going to sue you for copyright infringement (since the work was copyrighted the moment I hit the laid the sacrosanct words into the text box and yours is clearly a derivative of mine).
Please provide me with all relevant information so that I may ensure that the subpoena gets delivered correctly.
Doctor (probably Dr. Hibbert): "I'm sorry, but the gene for male pattern baldness has been copyrighted, so I'm afraid I can't remove that stick from your husband's eye."
Patient's Wife: "What?"
Doctor: "Well, if it was in his leg, no problem! But, since it's his head, and that's where he's bald, we're going to have to make a few calls."
EPUB is the superior format. I firmly believe this, having worked with both extensively, and wish Amazon would get on board so that we could just get to the MP3 endgame-stage already. This holding out because they control the market thing is so... annoying./div>
I do much the same with my Nook Tablet, although I installed the rooted OS on a memory card so that I didn't overwrite the basic software (because frankly, the Nook Reader software is better than anything I've found on Android native).
I'm always on the lookout for more 3rd party sources... do you mind sharing the ones you use? I tend to use Smashwords whenever possible, although that's mostly for the indie stuff I buy./div>
I was replying to his ridiculous Poe-skirting comment as he posted his reply, so I didn't know who it was at the time. If I'd known it was ootb, I'd have ignored it entirely!/div>
And so the trade industry continues to reinforce my buying policy: I'll follow the few trade writers that I've been following for years, but anything new for me has to come from either the indie market or Baen (for being awesome for so long). TOR is getting a slow re-evaluation since their DRM-drop, but they just haven't had much that's interesting lately.
As it turns out, I'm not lacking for reading material, and I'm pretty sure that the last trade industry book I bought was "A Dance With Dragons" well over a year ago. My next one will be "Cold Days" (Jim Butcher) in November. After that... we'll see./div>
Yes, because the world turns around how you "feel" about a subject.
Guess what? It doesn't matter how you feel about it. More and more content creators are figuring that out. DRM is a failed policy. Locking up content only pisses off your potential consumers. Whining about it makes it worse.
Suck it up and deal with the fact that some people aren't going to pay for content, find the ones that will, and speak to them./div>
I'm not always a fan of Konrath's methods and/or attitudes, but I think he's got this one right. I'm hoping he'll share his standard contract/purchase form once he's got it all put together, especially if he's hoping for other authors to adopt these standards. I know I'd be on board!/div>
