I had a conversation with a friend who lives in a hi-rise and he insisted he had no choice.
"ISPs simply tap-danced around the restrictions by deeding ownership of those wires to a landlord in exchange for exclusive access to the wires. Because they're no longer technically owned by the ISP, exclusivity deals no longer violate the FCC rules."
What if search engines simply provide naked links to Australian news sites? I think most people would know what was happening so there wouldn't be a lot of confusion.
You could take a step further and obfuscate the text extracted from those sites but do it in a way that an (unofficial) browser add on could then 'fix'.
You could even throw out takedown notices to a random list of add on providers every once in a while if you have to .. knowing a new batch would pop up as soon as you did. This cat and mouse game may get Australian citizens annoyed enough to demand the law be rescinded.
I've never stepped foot in a prison and have only ever visited a jail once in my life but this subject is important to me. Important enough that I would have probably voted for someone like Trump (who I find offensive) if he said fixing this shit was a priority.
I'm ashamed of my country when I read things like this.
Anyone who would argue that law enforcement's contempt for the accused (and the minority/impoverished population in general) in Chicago has nothing to do with the crime rate is simply wrong. It goes both ways.
My brother in law is a cop in the same geographical region and I eagerly did a ride-along once .. I've never returned or spoken to him since because of what I experienced (12 years ago).
I did do a ride along with my brother-in-law a few years back. He's a cop in a mid sized southern Michigan city. The short version is: The entire precinct had no issues with using racial slurs (liberally) but when they actually interacted with people they treated a certain (perceived) group of people differently .. and it really didn't seem to track with their words.
Therefore, I'm not positive it's limited to "not being white" (because I am white and have experienced it more than a few times at home too) I think it starts with them thinking you can't defend yourself (i.e. you look 'poor') and when you throw 'not being white' into that situation it gets a lot worse.
My behavior and attitudes have not changed over the years but the way I'm INITIALLY treated by cops is drastically different now that I'm driving a $60k car (I have a led foot).
The only useful thing I ever heard come out of Rush Limbaugh's mouth has stuck with me for over 20 years and is as true today as it was then: "The first rules of the bureaucracy is to protect the bureaucracy"
"Often it really seems like the issue is that these companies are not French companies."
well.. yeah, of course it is. and even if it's not (to a specific Frenchy) the fact that it bothers everyone else is enough to get most of those people on-board too.
while I can say, without a doubt, that my ATT fiber is a MUCH better service than anything i ever experienced from Comcast it also doesn't allow me to use my own router or change the default DNS. also, I'm compelled to do business with a company i loathe. i really hope the forthcoming satellite offerings live up to the hype. I could also, conceivably, dump Verizon. then they could buy all the laws they want (I live in TN .. sooo) and it wouldn't matter .. that would be awesome.
I actually work at the electric company - the company whose pole's Google Fiber was fighting for 'one-touch-make-ready' rules to access.
They HAD an office in our building and never said much (read: anything). That's all I know - I'm still on the signup list and haven't heard a peep (ever!).
HOWEVER, I now have access to gigabit connections from Comcast (_slightly_ spotty at time but very usable even for gaming) and AT&T. I just got the AT&T one and currently experiencing installation issues, but when it works, HOLY COW.
After promos are over the cost will be (as far as I understand) AT&T $90/month - no cap (offered to gigabit fiber customers only) Comcast $80/month + $30/Month for unlimited
I'm disgusted with (overtly arrogant) Google and WILL switch to Apple (or maybe a new Surface phone???). In time Nest will be removed too. I'm done with that company/div>
I work in I.T. at a LARGE municipal utility so, maybe, I know a little more about this subject than Ted (maybe?).
Anyway, I 100% GUARANTEE if we got 'hacked' (which is a difficult proposition in the first place - NERC & FERC are DILIGENT in their assessments) we would simply disconnect the 'smart grid' and go back to the 'old way' of keeping the lights on.
Am I really missing anything by never, ever, using my Twitter account? If it's important Buzzfeed will have clickbait up within minutes ... and I'm not saying that's bad. They 'bait' me because they follow up a lot of 'real' stories with real reporting./div>
I figured it was TikTok ...
My 16yo started doing something similar about 8 months ago, we noticed it at the dinner table.
She was told, in no uncertain terms, to knock it off.
Problem solved

I have a 12yo and a 16yo. Neither have any interest in broadcast TV. Seriously, none - it's not even on their radar. Same with their friends.
Games and on-demand rule they day in our world.
