i'm pretty sure there are some folks in darfur saying "who gives a shit about some song you downloaded on the internet? they're fucking killing us, you asshat!"
a new britney spears album? yup. worth $0 to me. (sorry britney!) note, $0 is less than my time to find and pirate it is worth.
on the other hand, allow me to introduce to you a couple terms that the game industry has coined that you may be interested in: ARPU and ARPPU.
please also note: zynga gives away all their games for free -- yep. you can play any of their games you want absolutely free of charge. and, indeed, they earned $400 million in profit on $850 million in revenues in 2010 -- on free games.
it could be that entertainment-based content creation -- music, storytelling, plays, performances, etc. -- have historically (aka previous to the 20th century) all been service-based.
perform, or you don't get paid. is that really so different?
to all intents and purposes, the boxing and selling of ideas is a relatively new concept. the boxing and selling of the distribution methods, however, is totally different. conceptually, there's no difference between pages in a book and bandwidth over the wire. they are vessels to deliver ideas.
you can sell access to the idea, not the idea itself, because there's no inherent scarcity in ideas. only in the delivery method.
you know. it's just a hunch, but that might explain all this movement around "software as a service" that's been coming on strong of late.
all these startup hackers and next-gen business folks.
you may have heard of a few of these poor, destitute companies getting ripped off... twitter, facebook, groupon, zynga, etc. all started by people who were probably still in college during the time of napster.
1) you must be thinking per unique page view or something. that's a super tiny, completely unsustainable number. that's closer to arpdau vs arpu.
2) your comment doesn't even make sense. so ad rates 4 years ago were 100x more than today? wow. no wonder newspapers are going to hell. ad inventory is selling for a penny on the dollar today compared to 4 years ago!
you should have a dedicated "free faq" page linked from the navigation. it could talk about infinite goods and definitions of monopolies and all kinds of core knowledge a lot of these commenters are missing.
you could even use it as a link-to jump-point sort of thing that points to your past posts on the topics.
there's already a market for this. you can get any book you want via irc. it's free. and for someone who is technically astute, it's not that hard.
however, buying books on the kindle? it's a frictionless, awesome system that helps you find and one-click purchase content you want as well as help you find additional content you might like. it just works. and works well.
it's quick, painless easy and absolutely, without a shred of doubt worth at least $0.99.

silly people. treat the cause, not the symptom.

so, go ahead and look through your referrer logs. or, since you're on wordpress.com, your stats page ( http://jamesgannon.ca/wp-admin/index.php?page=stats ) in the bottom, right-hand corner.
no, it's okay. go ahead and look. we'll all wait.
...
now, you're going to tell us that all those sites who are linking to you? 51% of them asked your permission to link to your site first?
really?

some math
http://publishing2.com/2007/07/17/newspaper-online-vs-print-ad-revenue-the-10-problem/
ahe m. so. that means....
pre-paywall monthly ad revenue:
ads: $3.50 arpu x 21,000,000 users = $73,500,000
total: $73,500,000 revenue per month.
post-paywall monthly ad revenue:
ads: $7.00 arpu (more valuable!) x 3,000,000 = $21,000,000
subs: $1,000,000
total: $22,000,000 revenue per month.
genius move!

but what about the cottage industries
createspace.com for example:
https://www.createspace.com/Products/Book/
all the services you might need, ala carte, as you need them. and at very reasonable prices.
those dinosaurs are about to get eaten alive by a plethora of quick, nimble author services centers.
