She didn't, actually. Sony recently converted its store to Epub, and that means any of the ebook readers that support Adobe DE could have read the books she bought. All she had to do was download them again.

Sorry, I thought you meant it had Wifi or wireless (which it does not). Books are transferred over a USB cable.
Yes, in most cases you can download the firmware update and do it your self, but the fact remains that Sony didn't release this firmware update into the wild.
