I read alot of these types of posts and its quite baffling when I see 'comparison mismatches' as you have done with your theroy on music and idea poaching. I can see why you are confounded by which side you are on in this case. Comparitively you should be confounded by the whole lot you write, I know I am. Sometimes you make sense other times I am lost as to your direction.
It's one thing to build upon other peoples ideas its another to blantenly steal them. Sure the first person to build a toilet may be a bit peeved when the second person came along and built a better toilet but the first person really liked the second persons idea so he didn't fight it, in fact he went and built an even better toilet. And there have been better toilets made throughout history.
It's stilled called a toilet, no matter how many different types we see and use today. You don't see toilet companies suing each other do you?
So why are so many companies suing each other today? Because those being sued all use the approach of idea poaching! And that's exactly what it is.

How I wish that were true but it's not. Just ask Kodak and RIM. And they don't do something new with it or patent cases wouldn't be tossed out of court. They blantenly steal others idea, go about rewording a patent to make it appear like they came up with the original idea when they didn't.
Why are Java API's called JAVA API's and not Google API's? And how is it that a former Java developer just happens to be working for Google, coincidence? I think not. Yeah, I can re-write code too and call it my own. Sue me, I dare you!
Music is in and comes from nearly everything in life, agreed Music is a universal language. It's one thing to write a score and some lyrics and call it a song but its another when someone else takes that score and writes some other lyrics for it and calls it another song and quite another when someone else takes that lyrics and writes another score for it and calls it another song. I've never seen that done in the music industry without the original owner or holder of the copyright giving permission to re-mix it, and still they have to pay a royality for the use.
You can't even compare music to the types of idea poaching that are a very negative part of the world today.
I really wish that when you compare things to one another you stay within the same realm. Music to Music. Art to Art. Technology to Technolgy. and so on.
It's been a liitle while since I signed up here at TechDirt and in that time I've learned quite a bit. There have been ao many times when a post will bring me back to 'The Garden of Eden' and that dreaded 'Tree of Knowledge' story. You know, where god tells Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit of the tree or they will die, and Eve, told by the snake that that is a lie, eats the fruit and becomes self aware, then lures Adam into eating of the fruit as well, and they both discover their nakeness, and god, in seeing that, forces them to leave the garden. It always puzzles me why god would put a tree in their sight and then tell them never to eat of it if god didn't already foresee that that would be the obvious outcome.
It's the same story, retold over and over again, throughout the passages of time just under different circumstances, as I have found in many of the posts here. There's also a phrase, 'When will they ever learn', from the song 'Where have all the flowers gone'. I wonder, when will these industries and governmets ever get to the point where they learn that they can not tell others not to partake of the fruit that is plainly in their sight.

I would take that case for Iran. That is extreme prejudice on Googles' part. If they are going to map the world, Iran, however ignorant they may seem to appear in the media, is part of it, and so is the Persian Gulf. Imagine a map without Russia, China or the USA on it. For years I believe Google has been the USA's patsy. Seriously, why would Google go into other countries and collect data not related to mapping. Even thou they got caught for it they still did it. Google has a bad reputation around the globe. Many call them copyright thieves. Oh, yeah, sorry, I forgot, innovators, fair use''rs, would be more appropriate in this forum. (innovators are people who help to open up a NEW line of research or technology or art not steal other peoples claiming 'fair use')
I know people died from listeria because the workers failed to clean the equipment properly, but that is another Canadian story in itself, and a country wide epidemic, but please don't go there, the horror stories I could tell you would make you freak.
My poor Mother, god rest her soul, took all her records to some guy and had him put them on to cd's, which she left to me. None of these records can be purchased anymore. I still have the records and the record player too. I never use either. I guess this makes her a theft in todays world. I wonder if they will dig her up and make her stand trial LOL. My Dad also has tons of music on reel to reel which my Mother also transfered over to cd's. Poor woman, I guess she'll have to serve some time in jail for that too. :) I have tons of cassettes, we all know that cassettes dry up and become useless over time, just like reel to reel, not to mention its pretty obsolete these days too, which is why I have a guy transfering them all to cd's. Eventually I will rip them so I can play them in mp3 format on my phone, which will take me forever cause I have a massive and I mean massive music collection spanning from 1920 to the present. I refuse, refuse, to pay for the same music for each and every format that comes out just because others become obsolete. That's pure robbery. And lets be honest remixes are not the same as original recordings. And what about my parents movies they bought on beta, remember those. Or my movies on vhs. I've got tons of these too. Does this guy expect me to go out and repurchase them too. Eventually I'll be transferring them to blue ray. Most of these you can't even find anymore and those that can be found are not the same. My parents had all of Alfred Hitchcocks movies and I watch them on the movie network here last month, totally cut, not the same. As for this Cnd. MP, he has the idea that we should pay and pay and pay for the same stuff as media players change. I refuse, put me in jail, sue me.
Sorry, I missed those buttons on many posts. Had I known this article would bring this to light I would have commented more clearly, whether with more accurate insight or with a more proper witticism, especially in relation to Chelles' recap article, (which was pure heaven to me, I loved every word written). Congrats go out to those nominated. I'll pay more attention (put down the white wine) next time :)
That is preciously correct when it comes to gossip. In light of anything one creates, the mere fact that the creator (or other entity of the creation) claims to be the first to do so, and does well enough so that the public, or even a small fraction of it, has recognized the creator(s) to be the first, should be well enough to whet the soul of the creator(s). I don't think any creator(s) can argue against that fact. What they can and do argue against is the blatant thief/copyist/infringer, however one may label them, who comes about claiming the creator(s) first as the their very own creations, and then has the gull to go about fighting tooth and nail to claim the rights to such works, and/or, as we are seeing so much of now, the rights to share the works of others in a public manner without due credit, whether it be in payment/royalties, to the first.
Life has always been a double edge sword of which we stab or prick ourselves with daily.
