In Germany "private copies" are under pressure. The entertainment industries are lobbying to get over them, and partly achieved this. I.e it's not allowed to bypass DRM.
You're not becoming criminally liable if you did this for private purpose, but companies are able to sue you under civil law. I think this is similar in other European contries./div>
