All one has to do is read Ben Franklin's Autobiography and you'll discover his thoughts about patents:
That, as we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours; and this we should do freely and generously.
We've really lost that message.
The founding fathers didn't trust monopolies or anything in perpetuity either.
