Our Greedy Generation

from the more-more-more dept

While the article might come off a bit as sermonizing, I think we need a few more articles like the following. This article from Fortune, suggests that (especially in Silicon Valley) we've created a society where money is more important than other things in life. To some extent I think that's true. Not that I think it will help much, but it's important for people to read things like this and think about it occasionally.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Ironic

Ironic that an article criticizing the glamorization of instant internet wealth should come from Fortune. That's pretty much what I see the magazine doing lately.

      Re: Ironic

That's a good point... Well, it happens a lot though. A forum for promoting one viewpoint every once in a while will have this "self reflection" where they say "should we really be promoting this viewpoint?". But, then they'll realize that their readership (of course) supports it, and they'll continue. Nothing to change here...
