Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    No Subject Given

Crap. I hope they keep it together.

    I use them weekly.

    No Subject Given

Peapod sucks. They've always sucked and they always will. Webvan sucks a little less, but the whole premise behind delivering groceries just doesn't get me excited.

See, we like to keep Dan around because we know he's opinionated, but come on Dan: "why does Peapod suck?". When you just say they suck, you tend to make this conversation less interesting. I tend to agree with you, but I think they suck because I can do math and look at financial statements and realize that it's going to take years before these guys could create any sort of sustained profitability (that I can see). So, Dan, what's your reasoning?

        Re: No Subject Given

My reasoning is that every step we take with a company like Peapod or Webvan takes us one step farther away from ever having social interaction. One day, I'm gonna be able to sit in my apartment and never have to leave because everything can be done on the Internet. That may be great for some, but I think it's possibly one of the most dangerous side-effects of online communication. It allows people to hide from the world and others. Maybe I'm taking out my anger on Peapod, but specifically, I think that having bags and bags of groceries delivered based on shopping in virtual aisles is less efficient than just driving to Safeway.

          Re: No Subject Given

And how much social interaction do you have on your normal trip to Safeway? I go to Safeway once a week and I really have no desire to have any social interaction with anyone there. I think the "social interaction" argument is a lame one. You can't blame a company that's trying to make things more efficient for "social problems" like that. You (and eveyone else) has the choice not to use them. If you think it's less efficient, then don't use those online sites, and if enough people agree with you they'll all go out of business...

I love Safeway. One of my favorite times of the year is during Passover. I can hang out in the Passover section at Safeway to meet girls...
