Microsoft Tries to Pull Material off Slashdot

from the more-questions dept

I'm sure all the Slashdot readers already know about this one, but it's worth posting anyway. It seems that Microsoft has asked Slashdot to remove some postings which they say contains confidential information. Slashdot has been trying to figure out what to do. Of course, once the information is out, it's going to be hard to take it away again. This is definitely another tricky legal question. How do people feel about this? Is Microsoft just being pushy, or do they have a real claim here?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Quick and easy fix.

One. Remove the info. No prob..once off their site...they don't need to be involved.
Two. Kill the user's accounts. Tough....
Three. Some of them were ACs, and ..well...hell. Give their IP to MS. I know it is BAD for them to get this info, but ...people know better then to post MissionImpossiable info.

    Sometimes you gotta wonder...

...what goes through Microsoft's corporate mind. Even if they are in the right, asking the slashdot community to remove posts is like asking the Cuban-American community to give up Elian. What kind of reaction did they expect?

Actually that is a really good point. They just drew so much attention to the "offending" posts, that otherwise probably would have passed on.

Uh, yeah. I thought it was really funny when I read the MS email to slashdot and it actually linked all the offending comments for the convenience of the slashdot community to go look up in case they'd missed it the first time... I actually thought it was some sort of well-written prank b/c "how could MS be so dumb?" Oh wait. Nevermind....
