Haggleware

from the companies-that-love-hassles dept

Firedup.com has decided to allow customers to haggle for their goods, a tradition taken from middle eastern markets. If you've ever tried haggling, you'll realise how annoying it can become after a while. Novelty value is one thing but wasting your time haggling with an electronic merchant is a totally different story.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Not really a middle eastern tradition

Haggling is not really a foreign concept. I wasn't until the turn of the century that American's started setting non-negotiable prices. I believe it was a Woolworth five&dime store in Pa. that started it. Before then, Haggling was the way to determine the price of something.

    Haggling

Of course, HaggleZone has been around for a couple of years now from NetMarket and never really took off, so I'm not sure why suddenly this other company thinks they've hit on something big. Plus, I think NetMarket has a bunch of patents (yeah, I know, don't laugh) on haggling over the internet... so, expect some lawsuits...

      Re: Haggling

there was IP litigation. yes our patent was amusing. yet if you understand what we actually created (WE, NOT being not netmarket/cendant but the inventors/developers of a genuine negotiation engine tecnology) the patent did not accurately represent what we actually created. good for me as i still imagine genuine (not silly consumer commerce) applications of the real technology.

I would very much appreciate it if the inventor of this would contact me as I have first hand experience as an innovator and live version of Chester from 1995 having opened a haggling concept on Oxford Street England called Make us an Offer!
I look forward to your earliest contact please.

not an inventor of "haggleware" - was the algorithm person and lead development of "hagglezone" software and data models - might be an interesting conversation if we chat.
