Content Wheeling and Dealing

from the we-shall-merge-and-conquer dept

Feed and Suck have formed a new media network called "Automatic media". Their plan, among other things is to increase user-generated content (basically what you all do on Techdirt and Slashdot) on their sites and pursue low cost marketing strategies. Oh and of course hints towards profitability in the near future were also made by each company (it seems to be a standard now in the industry). I have to admit that I've always been a proponent of content companies on the Internet, they may not be very profitable but they can make pages pretty "sticky".

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    User-generated content?

You call this user generated content? ;) Hell, this is my site, and I wouldn't even spin it to say that we've got all that much user generated content. Some, sure, but not a lot. I'm still a little confused as to why though. We've got loads and loads of traffic, but it seems we've got the quietest traffic in the world. Oh well.

Why don't you sell off Techdirt to Automatic media? That would be pretty fun and then they'd pay the bills too (we could be like the slashdot guys, chilling with some big Geees!). Or maybe not, ha!

    Re: User-generated content?

Just thought I'd comment on the quiet traffic. First off, let me say that I'm a first time caller, long time listener :) I used to be a heavy poster on some of the other sites, but now restrict myself to simple lurking. I mean, with the slew of nerd/geek sites (let's not forget Usenet), I'm suffering from information overload, nevermind trying to post comments and rebutting replies. I easily eat up a whole day just scanning news sites. Now with less downtime at work I'm limited to loading up A HREF=

      Re: User-generated content?

Heh. Well, we have plenty of "long time listeners" who never chose to call in. The logs make that very clear. It would be nice if more people commented, but I don't think it's necessary. I know plenty of people enjoy what they get out of Techdirt, and there's no reason for them to comment. Hell, if I did this only to get the comments I would have given up a long time ago. I've been doing Techdirt for almost three years now, so it's certainly not for the fame and fortune it's been bringing me... :)

I do it for the Fame and Fortune! Have you seen how my face has been plastered all over Alaska, I'm told that I'm a local hero (at least that's what I saw in a dream of mine a few nights ago). The fact that I don't live in Alaska, never read anything much about them and know no one from that state, has nothing to do with it though!
