You're Being Watched...Right Now

from the send-me-the-results dept

It seems that some researchers are out there monitoring and recording online discussion groups for "research purposes." Hey, I say bring it on. All I ask is a detailed analysis of the way my mind works. I've been trying to figure it out for years and have really never wanted to pay for a professional analysis. Ignoring those benefits, I'm not sure what the gripe could possibly be for people who object to this. You are posting to a PUBLIC area, so unless you are copyrighting your words on a regular basis, it becomes public domain by default.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    What's the big deal?

A friend of mine was monitoring and recording IRC channels for the purposes of research in 1993! Where's the news in this?

BTW can you fix the horrible Microsoft apostrophes so that they render correctly on sensible systems?
