The Questionable Linux Biz
from the penguins-might-make-money dept
I like Linux but I’m not so sure it’s a great business opportunity. Some of the larger companies may be able to survive on service fees. However, when it starts to come down to individual file managers, such as Eazel, also charging services fees to stay alive, I become extremely doubtful. Basically, my view is that Eazel will either get bought out or sink, it won’t be able to exist as a stand alone company.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Eazel
But, you also have to take into account intangibles like the fact that a Krispy Kreme just opened up directly across the street from their offices... Will this motivate them to work harder? Or will it cause them to waste their time eating donuts all day... :)

Re: Eazel
Also, I actually don't think you could make a nice little business out of just selling a file manager. I think the idea is that the file manager starts to take over everything that you do (at least that's the way Nautilus seems to act) and then suddenly (uh oh!) you're stuck using Nautilus entirely, and then there are all sorts of other services associated with that... and hopefully you're interested in buying into them. They're basically trying to co-opt Linux and become the Linux platform...
I don't even think they plan on "taking over the world", but just a portion of it. A portion that keeps you stuck there...
