More Than 75% Of Shoppers Abandon Shopping Carts

from the ouch dept

Apparently more than 75% of online shoppers abandon their shopping carts before purchasing. While I have issues with the claim that it's costing etailers $175 per abandoned cart, it is obviously an issue. The main reason? People thought the shipping costs were too high. Slow loading pages add to that as well. Just this weekend I abandoned a shopping cart twice for the same product (an integral part of a planned, and now useless, Halloween costume). The first time I received a database error (not a confidence building sign). When that finally was fixed, I was all set to buy the product. Then, at the very last stage they pointed out the product wouldn't be shipped until November 25th. What a waste. I think most retailers don't even think about their customers expectations most of the time.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    shopping carts

    The reason is very simple.

The only way to get the price including shipping is to add a product to your cart. It is just people window shopping.

      Re: shopping carts

I tend to agree on people just window shopping (I'm pretty sure it isn't a lost oppertunity for a sale!) but what interested me more was your halloween costume (yes I know I'm being silly). I was wonder what you were going to dress up as, what do you think tech biz guys should usually be (devils maybe)?

I've got to get an outfit together for the Engage halloween party here in London(sounds like it'll be fun).

Yes, I agree on the window shopping thing. That's why I had problems with the $175 figure for the most part. It's also why I think most sites should figure out some way to make the shipping charges clear from the beginning.

Halloween costume is a secret... :)
