Modo Shuts Down, Idealab Blamed

from the does-this-makes-sense? dept

I was surprised to read today that Modo.net was shutting down. It had been receiving quite a lot of hype, and I'd heard from numerous people who really liked the device. According to the article, sales were doing well, and growing rapidly. An unnamed source blames Idealab for pulling their funding for Modo. This strikes me as very odd. Idealab has been struggling to find good companies to fund (apparently) so that they can pull off their IPO. Modo is in a hot space (wireless), had a good idea, and actually seemed to have strong end-user demand. So, why would Idealab pull their funding?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    it's not completely useless

While it will never get data again, the Modo does have a built-in Tetris-style game.
    - press and hold the left and right buttons
    - while holding, press and release the little button below the display twice
    - release the right button
    - release the left button
It doesn't always 'take' on the first try, but you should be able to get it to work with a little practice.
