All The Lonely People... Where Do They All Come From?

from the It's-only-a-*model* dept

Mathematicians have modelled the effect of bombarding "ideal-mate" images on a society. The conclusion: "society became measurably miserable." The rationale is that high expectations are not being met. So I guess the answer is to aim low. Somehow, though, I just think this is the work of a disgruntled grad student....

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Figures

I've kind of suspected something like this for a while..., but that's not my point here.

The irony is that, while the article reports that bombarding us with images of beautiful people makes us more unhappy, it includes pictures of Jennifer Lopez, George Clooney, and others. Thanks. Next I guess they'll publish a story about the perils of eyestrain using a 4-point font. Or an article on carpal tunnel syndrome that requires you to click through twenty pages to read it.

    Of course...

This also might mean that you're that much happier when you do land that super-model girlfriend who can also write perl script. :) Aim high!
