Maybe Wireless Tracking Devices Are Not So Good

from the so-I'm-not-the-only-one-who's-a-little-scared dept

I avoided posting the thousands of stories that appeared over the weekend concerning the "digital angel" technology, or the others that were talking about more location-based marketing to your cell phone, because they were all so damn enthusiastic about the technology. I'm not convinced it's such a great thing, and other are apparently scared of the technology as well. I think the privacy issue is an important one to keep in mind. I also don't really want to know if the pizza place I'm walking by has a special sale going on right now. It sounds like a marketer's dream, but does the consumer really want it?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    No Subject Given

difficult not to sound paranoid about this, but ever faster computers becoming capable of tracking all these implanted people and what they spend, where they go, who they meet, what they watch, say, (think)

    thanks but no thanks

just because privacy is harder to acheive, it doesn't mean it's not worth fighting for.

      Re: No Subject Given

I think that tracking someone is wrong no matter what the case. It would be like tying someone up and watching them all day long. A person is going to do what a person is going to do. You can't be a watchdog to them. It's just not right. An individual has the right to his or her own life. No matter what the situation is.
