Using Avatars In Meetings
from the talk-about-telecommuting dept
The old joke about people who videoconference in to meetings from home is that they can just put on a nice shirt with their sweatpants. Of course, now you may be able to not get dressed at all, as some people are trying to create systems for online meetings where you are represented by an avatar of yourself. Of course, things like this have been around for a long time and never really caught on. I remember using OnLive Traveler more than three years ago for the same purpose (though my avatar was a floating fish). Of course, as mhh5 pointed out to me, it seems that avatar quality may be improving. I still don't know if I'd trust an avatar to conduct my business for me, though I guess it might be easier to program in "keep a poker face" than to actually perfect my own (admittedly weak) poker face.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
