People Want Video Ads On Their Wireless Device

from the uh-oh dept

Here are two articles that can be combined in a way to suggest that your mobile device is soon going to be over taken by crazy advertising while killing all your bandwidth. First, is an awful study suggesting that people actually like receiving advertisements on their wireless devices. My guess is that people are intrigued by the novelty of it all, but when it becomes pervasive it is just going to be annoying. Add to that the new ability to easily send streaming video ads and I think we may soon have a problem. I do not want streaming video ads on my mobile phone.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Innovative advertising

I think that the survey confuses the fact that people want streaming video and not ads! It is cool to get streaming video but I don't agree with using this streams to push ads. Marketeers should use their brain a little and find innovative ways to include ads within streaming broadcasts that way everyone's happy!

      Re: Innovative advertising

I don't want to get advertising any place, any time. I don;t care how innovative it is, I don't want it. I can live with print ads (just), but billboards, TV, Cinema and spam I can do without.
I partiuclarly hate those big lorries that people drive around with adverts on them and nothing else.

    Novelty Factor

Remember back when your first email address was a novelty? You probably didn't mind getting lists of light bulb jokes, stolen cake recipes and modem tax warnings. Now that the novelty's worn off, does anybody like spam?

    Bullsh*t

What a load of bullsh*t. This is FROM a company that does online advertising! Of COURSE they're going to say people want their OWN product!

This won't work. There's not enough bandwidth to make it unobtrusive. People will revolt when their ability to get info immediately is delayed by advertising dreck.
