Intellectual Property Questions Popping Up Again

from the they-never-go-away dept

I remember the big lawsuits from three or four years ago concerning "framing" content sites. Apparently, the issue was never really settled because here's a new lawsuit on the matter. Castrol is being sued for framing someone else's content. I tend to side with Castrol. They haven't done anything wrong in framing another site. If it really upsets Haymarket that much then they should take their content away - or at least block any visitors from Castrol. And, here's another article discussing trademark issues for food products online. Since you have to police your trademarks to keep them, companies are hiring people to sit on the web and find any and all violations of trademarks on things such as "Derby Pies".

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    No Subject Given

Beyond that, the JavaScript required to unframe the site when framed is pretty trivial.

      More technical solutions

Or check the refer[r]er and either block the other guy's frame or require entry through your own front page.

A better-still (non-technical) solution would be to just get over it. But I guess that's asking too much.
