Internet Phone Rant

from the who-wants-it? dept

A very good rant from John C. Dvorak about all this hype about using your cell phones to access the internet. There's no evidence to support the fact that people will rush to use internet enabled phones for anything other than the most basic tasks. There is plenty of evidence that it's slow and annoying. While you could have said the same thing about the regular internet not so many years ago, I agree with him for the most part. Wireless devices are useful as an additional way to access small bits of information. I really don't see it becoming that much more useful - at least not in the near future.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Wapped out

Mobile phone access of the Internet is (or at least ought to be - WAP prevents this) for :

    bus/train timetables
    cinema/theatre schedules
    and similar things

    Nothing else.

    RE: Internet Phone Rant

If you had use something like AvantGo with decently formatted channels then an internet phone might have potential. But until the content providers wise up and start providing XML data this isn't going to happen.

This is especially true for truly useful functions like bus or train routes. The Washington DC bus system provides it's schedules in PDF format! Nothing other than a PC or a printer has any use for this. Whereas a simple URL-based search engine would be perfect for WAP and other portable web devices.
