Slashdot Story Generator

from the damn-they're-good dept

frankt writes "For those of you who think that Slashdot doesn't update often enough, there is now the Slashdot Story Generator (SSG). The SSG removes the annoying wait between Slashdot story postings. Just press the convenient "Next Story" button and you'll get get the rush you desire when you see your chance to make the "First Post". Yeah, well, when does someone make a Techdirt Story Generator? Huh?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Except that... on average stories that show up on both sites actually tend to (though not always) show up here first. Oh well... Anyway, I think the repeat level is fairly low.

        Re: TechDirt Story Gen

The story generator lacks the cynicism needed for techdirt stories.

But to be serious for just a second, techdirt stories cover a broad range of topics, and would be much harder to parody, IMHO. Slashdot is too easy, which says something about the narrow viewpoint represented there.

Don't get a swell head. I was originally going to say something like "Take the SSG and replace Linux with VC, ..." then I realized that other than some well-deserved VC bashing, there's hardly any easily parodied "tone" to techdirt, unlike another site that would implode if a single story managed to mention Linux, Microsoft (negatively), privacy, anime, hacking, and geeks.

It would be amusing if someone put one together, I guess you could try to use something like those boolean recognition systems to try to interact with the site (currenly used in a few knowledge management portals). You could have different triggers for preset replies.
