Layoffs Creating New Slackers

from the the-new-new-economy dept

Thinking that everyone is stressed out about dot com layoffs? Maybe not. In fact, the layoffs seem to be creating a new "slacker" culture of people who are just hanging out and relaxing. I know a bunch of people who spent some time improving their golf game or their surfing ability - but they all seem to go back to work full time after a bit. Of course, this extra time for relaxing is apparently making some people jealous. Then, of course, there's the fact that some people can't actually afford to not be working full time - but no one seems to care about them.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Slackers

After a slack period of some undetermined time, the Slackers (and expect a large force of them in time) will begin using the internet again in some interesting ways, and developing some renewed values and forces. Silver lining in every cloud, you say, an economic downturn may not be a bad thing afterall.

      Re: Slackers

I agree with you Clous. I'm sort of in that relaxing phase, I've got a good enough package from work that I've decided to enjoy london and then head back to NYC to get a new job. I'm even working on a few little exciting projects ;)

    Can't Slack for Long

You can't slack for very long in the SF Bay Area. $2K/month and up in rent every month will eat up a nestegg pretty quickly.

A story like this really makes me question the work ethic of the dot-commer group. Either they're working for inflated wages and the promise of instant riches, or they're not working at all. I wonder what will happen in a few months when they have to return to the workforce, if it turns out that the job market isn't what it was a year ago, and the jobs that are available are a bit more mundane and don't come with promises of instant wealth.
