People Pissed Off At New ICANN/NetSol Plan

from the with-good-reason dept

I didn't post the news of Network Solutions keeping control of .com for another bunch of years if they give up .org, because it was pretty widely covered elsewhere - and a lot of these TLD fights aren't that interesting. However, part of the proposal was a bit strange. In giving up .org, they were going to pass it on to an organization that would return it to its roots and only allow non-profit organizations to have .orgs. That might sound nice, but for years anyone could get a .org, and so you'd suddenly be invalidating the majority of .orgs that people have had and enjoyed for years. Not surprisingly, this is pissing many people off. Is there anything that ICANN has done yet that people approve of?

    The roots of .ORG

It's bullshit that it was *ever* intended for "non-profit organizations". It is a catch-all TLD, not a "non-profit" TLD. Look at RFC 1591:

ORG - This domain is intended as the miscellaneous TLD for organizations that didn't fit anywhere else. Some non-government organizations may fit here.
