We Don't Do Enough To Promote Ethical Behavior Online
from the scams-scams-scams dept
An interesting article suggesting that we don't do enough to punish people who are unethical online. Too many online websites are doing very questionably ethical things such as mouse trapping, continued pop up windows, automatically downloading software, and forcing you to change your home page. In the case of the article, the writer's daughter got all confused. While it was easy enough to figure out and fix - it isn't that way for everyone. So, the less knowledgeable get tricked and pissed off, and there's nothing they can really do about it. While I'm not sure if there's a real solution to this, I have found that online businesses do tend to take much more of the attitude of "well, if you don't like it, fuck off" rather than any sort of standard customer service response. It would be nice to find a business that actually responded to what its customers wanted online.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
