Mac Attack

from the Risky-Business dept

Techdirt usually likes to bash Apple's hardware and software, but why overlook their business strategy? Apple is set to open retail stores everywhere from NYC to Palo Alto to McLean, Virginia!?! Meanwhile, back at the halls of justice, Apple is trying to regain their education market by pushing their new iBook. These are fairly aggressive moves against Gateway and Dell (respectively). Who's says economic downturns aren't the perfect time to wage war? Um, yeah, that's the ticket.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    McLean

McLean is a hoity-toity suburb of Washington DC; It's kind of like Palo Alto's relationship to San Francisco.

    an ananolgy

White Castle is a nation-wide chain and Jerry Springer airs across the country daily, that doesn't really attest to their quality.

Three stores? Pardon me, but someone help find my giveashit hat.

Agressive moves against Dell and Gateway? Uh, that's like saying a Springer store opening in Philly and 3 more redneck stations playin his afternoon show is an agressive move against Donahue reruns and Oprah.

ps) I don't mean to be negative. but if Apple ever hopes for a chance in hell of anyone taking their product as a serious piece of Hardware and not an expensive piece of furnature, they need to price their products competitively and boost their CPU crunching power to at least come close to their PC competitors. I know they're big with kids, but so were swatches - both are good examples of expensive hunks of plastic crap.

      Re: an analogy...

Wow. The Apple-related posts on Techdirt are always amusing...

BTW, I happen to agree that opening retail stores is a bad move for Apple. An aggressive move isn't necessarily an effective or even threatening one...

    Surprise? Not...

I guess after a decade of telling retailers to "go fuck themselves" Apple discovers they don't have a retail presence. This is yet another gasp for breath from a near death company. I mean, seriously, does anyone really give a shit about Apple anymore?
