The Humiliation Virus
from the just-think-of-the-possibilities dept
Salon has come up with a number of examples as to why the Sircam virus has the potential to be extra embarrassing. Since it grabs a random file from your "my documents" folder, who knows what you've just distributed to everyone you know. Salon comes up with a bunch of possible humiliations from secret corporate documents to the awful novel you started or the compromising pictures of yourself you've got stored on your hard drive. The one thing that I've found odd is that I've received about 10 or 12 copies of the virus from a single person - and it's someone I don't know. As far as I can tell I think it's a spammer who happened to have my email address in his/her addressbook. Serves them right. I hope it fries their hard drive (though I still can't figure out why I keep getting more copies of the virus from that one person).Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
