Built To Change

from the focus-focus-focus dept

An interesting talk with the guy who wrote the book Built To Last near the beginning of the dot com craze - where he talks about what visionary companies do to stay there. Times have changed, but he still sticks by a lot of what he said then. He's now coming out with a new book called Good to Great, which explains why some companies make it and others don't. What he talks about in the interview is the importance of focusing on what you do best as a company and making sure that any changes you make help make that better. Everything else is a waste of time. He tends to think that two phases companies have gone through over the past five years (first their obsession with change, and now their obsession with "back to basics") completely misses the point. In both cases they're doing something for the sake of doing it - rather than doing it to actually help their company.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
