Career Centers Struggling

An interesting article about how even with more and more people out of work, local offline career centers are struggling. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, they're not receiving corporate donations any more. More importantly, though, people are getting all their career center type advice online. I'd just like to think that Techdirt's own online career center is putting all of these offline career centers out of business.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone.     They are contacting us recruiters too because they know we have "ins" with our clients and we are agressive in contacting the decision makers at other companies. They are not lost in the masses of resumes on the HR persons desk.

      Heh heh. Very nice. Just so it's clear, I'm only "promoting" the Techdirt Career Center as a joke - the punchline of that post. If it's useful to people looking for jobs, that's cool - but Techdirt doesn't make any money off of you finding jobs.

          Thanks Scott. Unfortunately, that's not "business". It's certainly one way to do business, but it's a way I've chosen not to for various reasons that I'm completely happy with. If you were running Techdirt than you would set it up differently, but since I'm running Techdirt, I've set it up the way I wanted to, which makes a lot of long term sense.

            Career center counsellors tend to be clueless idiots. Rarely know what the real world is like . Waste of time, unless they can get you personal contacts. Otherwise, youll spend 18 months fixing the punctuation on your resume, long after the position has been filled.
