Microsoft Flattering Apple

from the so-sincere dept

Imitation is the sincerist form of flattery, and an Apple fan from Business Week has written why Mac fans shouldn't complain that Microsoft is copying Apple with the release of their new Windows XP operating system. Instead, they should look on it as flattery. Microsoft has always been good at commercializing the ideas of others - and no one expects Apple to take over significant market share at this point. So, the Apple fans should sit back and relax and feel flattered by Microsoft. I'm all for that, as I'm sick of hearing Apple fans get all worked up about this issue. Who really cares which operating system you use, as long as it works?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    @

Think the lawyers care. Think the stockholders care. Think the folk at apple who put their sweat into this care. Can't believe you really think this way .... can't believe you think.

      Re: @

It's fun to see when people get all angry that they start insulting me, rather than the points I put forth. Obviously, I must be a "windows person" even though the guy who made the argument in the first place is clearly a Mac guy, and I was just summarizing his argument. Anyway, yeah, I use windows. But, I also use Linux and I use MacOS. I use whatever is in front of me at the time, because the fact is they all work for what I need to do. I don't care which OS I'm using as long as it gets the job done. If you do something that needs a certain OS, then use it. If you hate Microsoft for being a bastard company then don't use it. But you have to give me a better reason NOT to use something that works just fine than "you don't get it". That's about as good as "I know you are, but what am I?"

Also, I "don't think", because my argument doesn't agree with what you think.

Hey, the fact of the matter is that no matter what the lawyers, the shareholders, and the Apple employees do, it's not like the Mac is suddenly going to wipe Windows off the face of the earth. That was the argument in the article (again, not mine), and yet, I take the brunt of the argument. Sure, people associated with Apple from a business standpoing care, but that has absolutely nothing to do with my point. My point was simply from a USER'S standpoint it really doesn't matter. OS wars are a waste of time. Use what works and stop trying to force other people into your world view. People want to use what works - and for the most part, they do. If you want to promote what you like, that's cool, but trashing people for using some other operating system that works fine for them is silly.

Come on, if you're going to challenge me, don't insult me, but come up with a real argument.

    I love macs

If they wern't so damn expensive, I would actually buy one.

I think Apple does themselves a great disservice with their pricing scheme.

      Re: I love macs

First of all, macs really aren't that expensive. Sure, there is no 300$ Mac, but does anyone want a 300$ PC? I suppose someone does. I'm not saying that they are dirt cheap, but go buy yourself a new iBook for 1500$, it's a great machine, and a laptop to boot.

I've got to agree though, if it works, use it. The thing I really hate is all the people who complain about Microsoft all day long and then keep using every possible Microsoft product they can get their hands on. Either put up and shut up or actually look into an alternative.

    Apple Be Flattered.

Hmm. Apple be flattered. Then I guess if I am downtown some night, get mugged and the mugger steals my leather jacket, that the next time I see my jacket I should be flattered that I had enough good taste to have my property stolen from me.

    God, that's a lame justification.
