Fear Not Driving Shoppers Online

from the that-was-fast dept

Yesterday we mentioned a bunch of questions that were being asked about online shopping this year. Many people were saying that people would shop more online this year because they're afraid to go the mall. Well, why speculate, when you can investigate? Nielsen/NetRatings has looked into the matter and found that people aren't jumping online out of fear. In fact, they don't really expect a big increase in online holiday shopping this year. Only 5% said they would shop online out of fear. However, that won't offset the decline in sales due to the economic slowdown.

Fear driving consumers online or off

One might have speculated immediately after 9/11 that fear would drive some consumers to make more online purchases. However, since the anthrax scare, isn't it possible that fear has also made people wary of getting stuff through the mail? If you're too scared to go to the mall, maybe you're too scared to have a bunch of stuff shipped to you.
