Can Information Theory Beat Terrorists?
from the our-secret-weapon? dept
Thomas Stewart has a long article in the latest Business 2.0 discussing whether or not the theories behind social networks can be used to defeat terrorist networks. The theory, which mostly had been used as a management theory, explains how groups link and work together - and where their weaknesses are. There are some interesting ideas there, but it reads like a bit of a stretch. It's not really clear how these theories can help (not that they can't - but even the explanations are a little thin on details of how to put this stuff into practice). However, it did get me thinking about such things, and there are some valuable points in the article about ways to fight back against a terrorist network through social engineering. At the very least, it's a different way to think about things, since it's unclear if the old way is doing us any good right now.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
