IBM Pays Up For Graffiti Campaign

from the that'll-learn-'em dept

Remember back in April when IBM stooped to using graffiti for advertising? Well, the city of San Francisco has worked out an agreement, where IBM will pay them over $100,000 as a fine and to cover the costs of removing the spray painted linux symbols all over the city. Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Fines are not enough

As long as the "punishment" is just a fine, IBM and their ad agency can plan their budgets for it. What's to stop them or somebody else from doing it again. In fact, I've heard of similar cases (Xbox ads in Australia, I think). They should have gone after the people responsible--the decision makers, not just the peons--and made them perform community service to clean up grafitti.

Perhaps we should launch a war on terroristic advertizing.... and try IBM in a military tribunal....

I'm sure further steps will be put in place if this happens ago, good point though.
